I’m behind on this, a little context would be nice? Take aways from just observing and knowing the unwritten rules - You don’t typically hit someone on purpose putting the tying run on in the middle to late of the game. - You don’t hit someone just because they just hit a home run. - The stare down from the Soler started the escalation (outside of the pitch, if intentional) - Lopez had to stand his ground after the stare down. - If unintentional I love the stance Lopez had saying come get me. - If intentional this was the wrong time to do anything and location back to lower leg is where you want to go. - Entertainment wise this was an outstanding baseball fight. - Team Morale wise depends on context. #angels #Braves

@Seth_3773 Think that’s bad? The local HS coach can’t even throw a baseball. He’s been coaching his son since LittleLeague then got the HS job because he was the only one who applied.

Apparently, Nats coaches are now using tennis rackets instead of fungos to hit fly balls to their outfielders. This is really the point in baseball, where you’ve gotta sit there and go holy crap. We need more baseball people and less nerds teaching this game.

@Seth_3773 I coached a team of 10 year olds who struggled catching fly balls. Took a tennis racket and tennis balls to practice each day and hit tennis balls in the air. They bounce out of the glove easier, so they learned how to close their gloves quicker. After 2 weeks, they all improved.

It’s not, getting a read off the bat matters. You have no clue what you don’t know…. Baseball is dangerous in the sense we all played at some point. So, you have a lot of unqualified people spitting opinions they think are valid yet… They don’t even know what they don’t know.

@AshleySinclair0 That’s not the point, it’s never been the point. I went over this at length yesterday.

@Seth_3773 Just want to point out that taking breaks doesn't make you "not great." It's a commitment that shouldn't even be asked of children in the first place. There is ZERO gain to not taking that week off. If they need it THAT BAD, it shows how you failed as a coach prior to that week.

- Being great isn’t for everyone. I made a post about staying committed to your team during spring break. A lot of people sympathized with kids breaking that commitment to take a vacation. - Being great isn’t for everyone. I make posts about doing extra work and going far beyond what’s normally expected. Then I hear parents say, “Let the kid have time to be a kid.” - Being great isn’t for everyone. I make posts about kids listening to old-school coaches and handling tough love. Then I see parents jumping in to make excuses for their soft kids. - Being great isn’t for everyone. I don’t talk about how to be average. I talk and post about how to be great, how to be special. I talk and motivate so that you can be the best you can possibly be. If you’re one of those parents making excuses, you’re not teaching your kid how to be great. But then again… Being great isn’t for everyone.

I appreciate that, I wouldn’t say I’m young in coaching. But I’ve helped put 150 plus kids in colleges since 2014 after I retired. My X is here (mostly) to help kids and parents understand what’s expected of those who want to reach those heights. I too intended this to be respectful back and forth, I think we all fight way too much and talk far too little. Hearing both sides of an intelligent conversation is important.

@Seth_3773 And I want to say, when I was younger and more immature... I thought like you about this. But life and perspective have taught me different. I hope it will you too one day. When I said "respectfully" I meant it. Coaches give and give and for that we thank you.

If you say you want to play at the next level, your actions have to match your words. Spring break is part of our season. Games and practices during that time are just as important as any others. When you choose a vacation over being available for your high school team’s baseball/softball games, you are letting your team down—no matter the reason. Your teammates are counting on you. Coaches build lineups, strategies, and chemistry based on who is committed and available. If you’re serious about playing at the next level, you don’t disappear during the season. This doesn’t mean family trips are “bad,” but it does mean you must be honest about your priorities: If you choose vacation during the season, that is your choice—but it will affect your role, playing time, and how your commitment is viewed. If you choose your team, then be present. Be reliable. Be someone your teammates and coaches can trust. Don’t say you’re “all in” and then vanish when it’s inconvenient. Commitment is shown by what you do, not what you say.

I do appreciate the feedback and respectful discussion. You’re right, it’s not the mlb or even college. But kids who want to reach that level need to learn that commitment and that’s what this post is about. Not what’s best for the majority but what’s best for those kids trying to learn what it takes to be the best. Not everyone gets to be the best…

@Seth_3773 Their spring break SHOULDNT BE a commitment forced on them to begin with. That's on you! The strong players will still be strong. The weak will be weak. And H.S. baseball isn't that serious. This isn't MLB. These are children and families and some players dont have the choice.

There is a lot of assumptions in that response. I appreciate you taking the time to respond to this. Facts are we are talking about kids and programs that make it (Special) . Not burn outs, not the kids who don’t see the value in commitment. We aren’t talking about the majority. We’re talking about the best.

@Seth_3773 Research shows differently. You shouldn't be putting needless commitment over risk of injury, burnout, mental health, etc,... when the return on investment isn't for their benefit, but clearly as you stated: Your ego (and insecurity) surrounding trust & commitment.
