Based on the way the media has smeared Chayka (and Toronto, and now, by extension, Sundin), every Leaf fan should want nothing but success for this guy. Every fan should be rooting for him. An easy way to gain even more favor w the fanbase is to can the dolt behind the bench.

Chayka mentions looking at how the team broke out of its zone and team speed here. He's also a data guy. Really hard to picture how he could ever justify proceeding with Berube behind the bench after a critical review. That's if he's making the call...

Definitely one of the better reads on Chayka, some really solid insights here. No denying Chayka can pull in some positive public perception by icing a solid team. One thing I struggled with under Treliving was the lack of urgency—curious to see how quickly Chayka operates.

The entire NHL, both media and fans, are more upset about Chayka being given a GM job after breaking the rules to get a leg up on competition than they were about Stan Bowman and Joel Quenneville being given new jobs after covering up sexual assaults. I'm not really surprised.

@VanRyn2Alcatraz My issue with the hire is he was pretty average and we needed great. This is being blown way out of proportion 😭 his floor is a lot higher than trelivings and if he did truly learn from his mistakes he could be very good for us

I am not the biggest fan of the Chayka hire but it’s been bizarre to see the media response to this. His Arizona tenure was not great but this is pretty over-the-top.

@simonleafs Like you can combine defensive impacts and offensive numbers into an overall war number and that’s what the Jfresh cards do - but you need more to evaluate a player… will carrier would be a good example as a guy who’s high on jfresh’s cards but isn’t a star…

@simonleafs I’m not sure exactly, but what I will say is WAR makes it easier to contextualize who’s an average player and who’s not… I don’t think you can break hockey players into average and not average. They impact the game and winning differently

If the decision to hire John Chayka as GM was Keith Pelley’s biggest as CEO, I truly believe John Chayka’s biggest decision as GM could be on Craig Berube. You can’t waste another year or two of Matthews and Nylander on the wrong coach. They’re going to be 29 and 30 next year.

My only Leafs GM take: John Chayka will be successful if he doesn’t let Leafs fans/media bully him into “adding grit” and “sandpaper” when he crafts an analytically driven team That’s how Dubas failed. That’s how Treliving made it worse Fill your team with skill top to bottom
