We are all in this together, so if you see fireworks being used in areas where they are banned, please report it through your local non-emergency dispatch line. Salt Lake City and Sandy residents can call 801-799-3000. For most other areas of Salt Lake County, call 801-840-4000. Only call 911 if there is an emergency. This year, authorities are taking a much stricter approach to enforcement, and a first violation carries a $1,000 fine.

Salt Lake County, we do not need to put ourselves in this kind of danger. We can individually take steps to protect our valley from the threat of wildfires this summer. We are going to need to choose to celebrate in new ways this year. And importantly, we are going to need to look out for each other and know what to do if we see a fire or see someone using fireworks where the risk is just too great.

200 yards separated the Bonneville Fire from The Huntsman Cancer Institute. This burn line shows just how close the fire came—and highlights the incredible efforts that kept it from coming any closer. To our firefighters, first responders, emergency teams, and everyone who stepped up to help: thank you. Your dedication, courage, and teamwork helped protect our community when it mattered most.
Utah Fire Info@UtahWildfire

The #BonnevilleFire has increased to 84% containment. Crews will continue strengthen the lines through end of shift today and likely tomorrow to finalize containment. Thanks to incredible work from the firefighters on the ground and in the air for all their hard work. This aerial view from Air Attack gives a good perspective of how close the fire came to the University and structures.

Bonneville Fire Update - 9:30 Again, the fire is now 495 acres and 5% contained. Air and ground crews made strong progress yesterday on the fire. Overnight, increased cloud cover and humidity helped moderate fire behavior, resulting in minimal activity.

Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County have filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in an effort to halt the unlawful decision to convert a warehouse into an immigration detention facility on the City’s west side without following federal law. The proposed ICE facility is a dire threat to the very essence of our community values. It would overwhelm the infrastructure in the region, harm area businesses, and strain public safety and public health resources. The federal government did not notify nor consult with local officials, including myself. saltlakecounty.gov/newsroom/salt-…

Please join me in wearing orange tomorrow for National Gun Violence Awareness Day. Together, we can raise awareness, honor those whose lives have been lost to gun violence, and support efforts to build safer communities. If you or someone you love is struggling, know that help is available—you don't have to face it alone.

I am sorry to learn of the passing of Karen Huntsman. Karen made a mark in so many ways though a deep commitment to family and community. I appreciate her and her family’s deep commitment to advancing mental health solutions and cancer research, as primary passions. On a personal note, I will miss her kindness and grace. attheu.utah.edu/health-medicin…

This summer, #SLCo is "honoring our past and feeding our future" with some incredible sculptures from local creators that will generate thousands of new donations to the Utah Food Bank. Stop by and see one, and bring a donation of your own.

FOLLOW-UP: Within hours of contacting the County about sprinklers running outside recommended watering hours on Salt Lake County-owned property, county leaders contacted the tenant and they corrected the watering schedule. The county also added a sprinkler issue reporting form to the top of its website so residents can report similar problems. You can find that link here: saltlakecounty.gov #Utah #SaltLakeCounty #WaterConservation #UtahWater #Drought #KUTV

Salt Lake County was proud to help bring the new "Rooted Together" History Walk at Holladay City Park to life. Blending storytelling, public art, and community space, this beautiful outdoor museum honors Holladay's history through a meaningful monument and seating area overlooking the baseball field. I encourage you to visit this new space to reflect, gather, and connect with the stories that helped shape the community.

Encouraging news from the latest Point-in-Time Count: unsheltered homelessness is declining in Utah and Salt Lake County. Thank you to the service providers, local leaders, law enforcement, and community partners whose work is helping move our community forward. There's more work ahead, but this progress matters. Read more about at the link in my bio.

Last week I joined Jen Campbell and Tyler Clancy to talk about domestic violence — the leading cause of homicide in Utah. That’s a fact more people should know. Salt Lake County is changing how we respond. Better training for law enforcement. More resources for survivors. And stepping in earlier, before a crisis gets worse. This work matters. We’re not waiting.

Opioid settlement dollars are now doing real work. Salt Lake County just approved a plan investing in prevention, recovery, and reentry — from sober living housing to peer specialists to Project RIO, a program that helps people experiencing homelessness and behavioral health challenges reconnect with stability and care. Strategy turned into action.

With the winter's low snowpack, we at Salt Lake County are mindful of our precious resources more than ever. Climate change doesn't just affect our environment - it is a public health issue. It impacts our air quality, access to food, and water supply. Salt Lake County Health Department hosted our Annual Climate & Health Symposium. We brought together experts, officials, and community organizations to continue the vital conversations around the future of our environment and public health.

3,200 pinwheels are scattered across the front lawn of the Salt Lake City and County building to raise awareness of child abuse. I joined Salt Lake City Mayor Mendenhall, The Family Support Center, and Prevent Child Abuse Utah to raise awareness to protect our most vulnerable community members, children. When we come together to make a commitment to helping children, prevention is possible. For help, call 211 to connect with resources, or call Salt Lake County Youth Services at 385-468-4500 for 24/7 help through the Safe Places program.

As the rain poured down, we took shelter in the Herriman Library to unveil a new public art piece fittingly titled "Puddle Jumpers" by artist Brooke Smart. "Puddle Jumpers" was previously displayed at the Eccles Theater and has found a new home at the Herriman Branch of the Salt Lake County Library. Thank you to Herriman City Mayor Lorin Palmer for joining the festivities, along with our Salt Lake County teams, who make public art displays possible. Take shelter from the rain and see the art in person!
