In 1951, a 14-year-old boy in Australia nearly died during surgery. He needed massive blood transfusions to survive. Strangers’ blood saved his life. He made a promise. The moment he turned 18, he would start donating blood. He kept that promise. He started donating in 1954. After the first few donations, doctors discovered something unusual. His blood contained a rare antibody that could be used to prevent a fatal condition in unborn babies. Before this discovery, thousands of babies in Australia were dying every year and doctors did not know why. Women were having miscarriage after miscarriage. Babies were being born with brain damage. The antibody in his blood changed everything. It was used to create a medication given to pregnant women whose blood was at risk of attacking their unborn child. His name was James Harrison. They called him “The Man with the Golden Arm.” He donated every two weeks for over 60 years. He never missed a single appointment. He expected nothing in return. In Australia, blood donors are not paid. He was terrified of needles the entire time. “I’ve never once watched the needle go into my arm,” he said. “I look at the ceiling. I look at the nurses.” His own daughter needed the injection during her pregnancy. His grandchildren may not have existed without his donations. “He has left behind a family that may not have existed without his precious donations,” she said. On 11 May 2018, at age 81, he made his 1,173rd and final donation. Australian law does not allow blood donations past that age. More than 3 million doses of medication made from his blood have been given to Australian mothers since 1967. He is credited with saving the lives of 2.4 million babies. He died peacefully in his sleep on 17 February 2025, aged 88. Scientists have since grown his antibody in a laboratory, hoping it will one day protect mothers and babies around the world.

Buster is a 11 year old male Mixed breed. He is available for rehoming and would suit a nice quiet home. Sadly his owners have passed away. Buster is good with dogs and children, due to his age we'd suggest a home with older kids so Buster can relax. He eats wet and dry food and can be left on his own for up to 6 hours. Buster is registered at the vets and fully house trained. He does have some arthritis in his back legs which doesn't seem to be troubling him. At night Buster sleeps in his own bed in the bedroom. He isn't keen travelling in the car. Buster hasn't lived with cats but has seen them in the garden. He likes to play with toys and loves to meet new people. For more information or to offer Buster a new home please email info@help2rehome.com Sorry we are unable to reply to messages to the page or comment enquires. Please email for any information.

🇯🇵 Japan is trending on X today. Good. It’s long overdue. Let me tell you three things about this country that will quietly rearrange everything you thought you knew about human nature. And animal nature, for that matter. Someone left an iPhone on a bench in Tokyo. Not in a sleepy suburb. In Tokyo, a city of thirty-seven million people, most of them late for something. The phone sat there. The next day, it was still there. Which means that every single person who walked past it made a small, private decision: not my phone. Leave it. In most cities, that phone would have had the life expectancy of a mayfly in a thunderstorm. Then there are the football fans. Japan plays a match, the stadium shakes, and then they tidy up. Every wrapper, every cup, every last plastic bag. They leave the stands cleaner than they found them. As a matter of course. As if it simply never occurred to them to do anything else. And then there is Nara. In this ancient city, over a thousand wild deer roam freely among temples and schoolchildren and tourists. They have lived alongside humans for thirteen centuries, considered sacred messengers of the gods. They will walk up to you, look you in the eye, and bow. Deeply and deliberately. It is, I should mention, a learned trick to get rice crackers. But here is the thing: somewhere along the way, a deer decided that the correct way to ask a human for something was to bow politely first. In Japan, even the wildlife has manners. No law requires any of this. No fine threatens it. It emerges from something much harder to legislate: the quiet, unshakeable conviction that the space around you is shared, and therefore your responsibility. Three small stories. One very large idea. The rest of us might want to take notes. ありがとう、日本。 Thank you, Japan. Gandalv / @Microinteracti1

In a groundbreaking social initiative, Albuquerque, New Mexico launched a program that pays homeless individuals to clean streets, parks, and public areas. The idea was simple — offers work, dignity, and purpose instead of punishment or pity. The results were remarkable: over 70% of participants have now secured permanent housing or full-time employment, transforming their lives and communities alike. The city’s “There’s a Better Way” program proves that compassion-driven policies can be more effective than traditional welfare systems.

No space? No problem. Even if all you have is a small balcony, throw a native Black-Eyed Susan in a pot and you'll feed 1000+ bees and butterflies all summer.

How is this sweet boy still waiting for a home? 🥺 Koda is a 13-week-old mixed breed pup (~18 lbs) with the calmest, cuddliest personality. He sleeps quietly through the night in his crate, is mostly potty trained with a routine, & is working on leash skills. 1/2

Can you please share? All of our income to help animals is raised by us, we don’t get any funding at all. It’s a personal service to help owners who go into hospital, pass away or simply can’t keep their pets anymore. There is always a reason and always a story where an animal needs help. £8.99 might not seem much to you, but to us every £8.99 really does help. It helps with the rising costs of fuel, food, vets fees and transport to help animals to foster care/new homes. If you can spare £8.99 you’ll receive one of our new Help2Rehome Tote bags and a personal note to say thanks, handwritten by one of our team. You can get yours here square.link/u/he8zEDn7?src… We know not everyone has spare funds, however you can still help by sharing our appeal and we’d be so grateful for either🙏🏼 🐶 🐾 🏠 🐈‍⬛
