🚗 🔌 Europe is at a turning point: electrify now or fall behind. Europe still relies on fossil fuels for nearly two-thirds of its energy consumption and rising hydrocarbon prices only reinforce the urgency to accelerate the deployment of electromobility across the continent. With the publication of the Automotive Package UFE underlines the importance of keeping the overall ambition of CO₂ standards for cars and commercial vehicles, and welcomes the introduction of a regulation dedicated to the electrification of corporate fleets. UFE regrets that this package brings new uncertainties at a time when accelerating electrification appears more necessary than ever. Calling into question the 2035 zero-emission target would permanently undermine European competitiveness against Asian manufacturers, discourage investment in electromobility and jeopardise the achievement of the Union’s climate objectives. Adjustments to the framework are needed. The electrification of transport represents a major industrial and climate opportunity for Europe, but seizing it requires a clear, stable and sufficiently ambitious regulatory framework.
