Venky is beloved @Harvard 🙏
Christopher Michel@chrismichel

New Heroes portrait of @Harvard's Dr Venkatesh Narayanamurti for @theNAEng & @theNASEM. Venkatesh “Venky” Narayanamurti sits against a blackboard crowded with equations, sketches, and fragments of ideas, an apt setting for someone whose life’s work has been about connecting theory with application. Recruited in 1998 to lead Harvard’s Division of Engineering and Applied Sciences, he reimagined its place in the university and beyond. Under his leadership, DEAS was elevated to the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences @hseas, an academic home built to integrate engineering and applied sciences with the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Venky’s vision reshaped Harvard’s approach to engineering education and research. He expanded faculty, broadened research areas, and deepened interdisciplinary ties. He also led the planning for the school’s transformative new campus in Allston, creating the academic blueprint and momentum for a state-of-the-art facility designed to promote collaboration across disciplines. The building would open after his tenure, but its conception and direction were his achievement. His own scientific work began in solid-state physics, where he made notable contributions to semiconductor lasers, quantum transport, and phonon optics. These advances influenced both fundamental understanding and practical technologies. Over the course of his career, he moved fluidly between research, institutional leadership, and science policy, holding senior roles at Bell Labs, Sandia National Laboratories, and the University of California at Santa Barbara before coming to Harvard. He served on national science and technology committees and has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the National Academy of Sciences in India. Those who have worked with him speak of his reflective manner and a knowing, mischievous smile. He listens intently, often letting silence linger before offering a crisp insight that reframes the problem. This combination of patience, playfulness, and precision has made him a trusted mentor and an enduring influence. Venky’s legacy is embedded in the institutions he strengthened, the building projects he set in motion, the scientific fields he advanced, and the generations of scientists and engineers who have carried his lessons forward.

It’s been a tough few weeks. My 10yo daughter was diagnosed with a very rare, aggressive cancer called interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma (IDCS). I’m reaching out to identify clinicians/patients who have encountered pediatric IDCS, indeterminate dendritic cell histiocytosis or other (non-LCH) histiocytic sarcomas cases. I'm trying to understand non-surgical chemo and targeted therapy options, new pathology markers to better diagnose subtypes/treatments, and any data on progression in pediatric patients. Please feel free to share – I’m trying to cast a wide net due to the rarity of this condition and how little is known. People can contact me directly at my first name (as written in my profile) at octant.bio.

My baby ruptured his spleen in a sledding mishap and there are no words to express my profound gratitude to the trauma and surgery teams @BostonChildrens. A week later and he is stable and recovering at home. ❤️🙏🏼💪🏼
