Ocean Park School House (formerly SMASH) welcomed students and their families for an exhibition of learning showcasing their Westward Movement project-based learning work in the school’s new multipurpose room. The program covers the history of the American West, the concept of Manifest Destiny and the impact on Native Americans.

Democracy, civic engagement and intellectual freedom take center stage during the Santa Monica College Public Policy Institute Spring Symposium, “Reimagining Our Democracy: For Us, by Us,” May 17-21. 📚 Community members are invited to attend a series of events, including public readings of the Declaration of Independence, discussions on civic participation and a special screening of The Librarians followed by a panel featuring librarians and educators, including members of the #SMMUSD community.

During Mental Health Awareness Month, #SMMUSD is proud to recognize the many partnerships that help support student wellness across our schools. 💙 SMMUSD joined the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) for an end-of-year celebration honoring social work interns completing their practicum experiences in schools throughout the county. Through partnerships with organizations like LACOE, SMMUSD students receive additional therapeutic counseling and mental health support from Master of Social Work and Marriage and Family Therapy interns working alongside school teams across the District. Thank you to all of the interns, counselors and mental health professionals dedicated to supporting student well-being each day. @Dr_AShelton

More Bike It! Walk It! Bus It! block parties took place across the district today, this time at John Adams Middle School (JAMS) and Franklin Elementary School. Students and families joined in school-based celebrations promoting healthy, environmentally friendly ways to get to school, including walking, biking and transit use across SMMUSD. 🌟🎉🌍

Today’s Bike It! Walk It! Bus It! celebrations brought energy and community spirit to Grant Elementary School and Will Rogers Learning Community with block parties encouraging students and families to walk, 🚲 bike and 🚌 ride transit to school. The events highlighted fun, safe and sustainable ways to get to school while celebrating active transportation across SMMUSD.

From #Samohi’s stage to Broadway’s biggest night 🎭✨ Congratulations to Samohi Class of 2016 alum Ben Levi Ross on his 2026 Tony Award nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical for “Ragtime.” A proud alum of Santa Monica High School’s theatre and choir programs, Ben previously starred as “Jack” in Samohi’s 2013 production of “Into the Woods.” We are proud to celebrate this incredible milestone and wish Ben the best at the Tony Awards.

Color, culture and community came together at Will Rogers Learning Community’s Cinco de Mayo celebration 🎉 Students, families and staff enjoyed a vibrant festival filled with music, dance and traditions that reflect the rich cultural heritage honored on this day. Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army’s victory at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, and today serves as an opportunity to celebrate Mexican culture and history.
