After two exceptional Important Watches sales, the auction calendar turns to #SothebysNewYork next, where one of the standout lots will be the first Simon Brette Chronomètre Artisans in rose gold ever to appear at public auction. Introduced in 2023, the Chronomètre Artisans positioned Brette among the most exciting voices in contemporary independent watchmaking. Encased in 39mm pink gold, this particular example is distinguished by its hand-engraved dial by Yasmina Anti. Known as the ‘Battle’ motif, the surface fuses Brette’s earlier ‘Dragon Scales’ and ‘Tiger Claws’ into a bold, textured composition. The movement also reflects the same level of detail: rose gold plates and bridges, twin barrels with a 72-hour power reserve, and Brette’s signature dovetail joint. Limited to just 50 pieces, examples of the Chronomètre Artisans remain exceptionally rare. The Sotheby's saleroom erupted in applause on Tuesday night as auctioneer Helena Newman dropped the final hammer on Vincent Van Gogh’s rare landscape, ‘La Moisson en Provence.’ It achieved $29 million at last night’s Modern Evening Auction, presented in partnership with CELINE, making it the second-highest price for a Van Gogh work-on-paper. ‘La Moisson en Provence’ is one of eleven watercolors Van Gogh produced during his time in Arles, and it’s one of only four from this group to remain in private hands. Bidders made quick work over Picasso’s Cubist masterpiece, ‘Arlequin (Buste),’ in the Sotheby’s saleroom on Tuesday night. A highlight from The Collection of Adele & Enrico Donati, the painting achieved $42.6 million in The Modern Evening Auction, presented in partnership with @celineofficial. ‘Arlequin (Buste)’ is one of Picasso’s defining works, painted in 1909 as he began to develop his signature Cubist style. Mark Rothko’s rare canvas ‘Brown and Blacks in Reds’ from 1957 was the star of the night, reaching $85.8 million. The collection also featured three Willem de Kooning paintings, each from a different decade of his career, which sold for a combined $27.2 million. The night continued with The Now & Contemporary Evening Auction, totaling $266.8 million. Monumental paintings from Jean-Michel Basquiat and de Kooning led the group, with records set for a series by Andy Warhol and Ed Ruscha. Kenneth Noland, Ding Shilun, and Joseph Yaeger also broke auction records.
