I will tolerate recurrent laryngeal nerve slander no longer! It's actually the result of several elegant solutions to difficult problems in embryology, and the length is a non-issue. A 🧵 1/13
Peyman Milanfar@docmilanfar

My meager education in biology and evolution gave me the mistaken impression that evolution optimized everything. But it didn't. One example is the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN). It goes from behind your ear, loops down below your aorta, and then back up to the voice-box 1/2

Solar is good. Nuclear is good. Wind is good. Do not let the fossil fuel dinos turn supporters of the future of power against each other. Build more clean power, and stop basing society entirely on chemical energy stored in the ground.

@RocDocClayton Most power usage (especially in hotter areas) happens during the day, which represents a straight up easy win. And it's getting way, way easier to cover the night with batteries.

@SpaceKoala Night. Solar is redundant because it cannot provide a base load. That makes its cost 100% optional and, therefore, expensive.

@rafaeltkinder @Orbital_Perigee Humans, like rockets, have things that go wrong that keep them from doing what they want to do. Introspection is the accident investigation of your own screwups. Needs to be done to move forward, but you also shouldn't stay there forever.

Gas prices so high Americans might have to start cutting back on essentials like utilities, rent, and private taxis for our burritos.

@lessaxwrong And my point is that he's thrown out the entire broad category. Pretty much anything good can be bad in excess.

@SpaceKoala Introspection is a broad category, you can wallow in misery inside introspection or you can figure out what went wrong constructively but they are both sub categories

Introspection is not obsession over how bad things are. It's looking inward to see why you did and said the things you did. You do it not because you want to wallow in self blame, but because you want to grow as a person and attain your full potential. People, like rockets, sometimes have to make changes to reach their full capability.

@SpaceKoala I do not think spacex and tesla would have got here if he was constantly obsessing over how bad and doomed everything in the companies was and how terribly his life could go

@SpaceKoala idk how these people don’t understand the difference between burning something once vs reusing it for decades. or maybe they do understand it and they want us not to? 🤔

@rechnen @detgrim Oh, you mean making all hiring decisions and determining how money is spent? Like Elon did? Like, there's multiple books on this.

The entire point of taking the island is that it represents 25% of Iran's economy. So Iran can destroy it, and massively tank their own economy, and basically cut themselves off from almost all their oil revenue. Or theoretically be forced to the negotiating table. Of course this stupid war will probably see it damaged in an invasion, and Iran going bezerk on whatever's left of everyone else's oil infrastructure within reach.

@anon526327 Just blowing it up is indeed an option, which makes this all that much weirder.
