I will tolerate recurrent laryngeal nerve slander no longer! It's actually the result of several elegant solutions to difficult problems in embryology, and the length is a non-issue. A 🧵 1/13
Peyman Milanfar@docmilanfar

My meager education in biology and evolution gave me the mistaken impression that evolution optimized everything. But it didn't. One example is the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN). It goes from behind your ear, loops down below your aorta, and then back up to the voice-box 1/2

@Barsky420 The funny thing about this perception is that the Osprey is actually middle of the pack in terms of actual safety record for the Marine Corps.

@SpaceKoala TBF traditional helicopters are fairly safe, can easily auto rotate down if the engine fails. Osprey's are absolute death traps by comparison, but you're def right about the maintenance

I think a lot of people miss that the main potential advantage of EVTOL over traditional helicopters is on the safety and maintence side of things. Those are actually a the big part of the costs that keep traditional helicopters from being used more.

@SpaceKoala Their range is crap compared to conventional helicopters and they don’t really fill the flying car concept.

@spacer01 I don't need the full helicopter range for most uses, and I don't need it to be a flying car.

@fakecarlsagan I kind of doubt a system that has to reliably function whenever the vehicle is moving would be more likely to crush you than the tiny tire change jack sitting in gravel on the side of the road.

@andrewtevans The best way to hit a 9 hour turnaround is to aim for a 1 hour turnaround and work towards that goal. But yeah, Starship is going to go absolutely bonkers.

@SpaceKoala Again, broken record comment. This gets compared to older tech, dare I say antique and outdated tech. It really is a thing of it's own, and once it gets going the history of rockets and space will be pre Starship (or at least F9) and post. There won't be any other comparisons.

It would be so freaking funny if the solution to climate change was just building so many space data centers at Sun-Earth L1 they function as an actual solar shade.

@Malky0010 @SpaceKoala It's almost as if the private sector is better at pricing in risk than a government bureaucracy.

I'm of the opinion that disaster relief funding should only be available to rebuild a house at a given address twice. The third disaster relief should be a land buyout so people stop building houses where they'll be destroyed.
Max Dubler 🏳️‍🌈@maxdubler

Single payer healthcare makes sense because the risk of getting sick is random; so price discrimination is unfair to unlucky people. Pricing risk to homes, OTOH, is good. If you choose to buy a house in a flood plain or fire risk zone, you *should* pay higher insurance premiums!

@SundryEtcetera There's a pretty major difference between "low chance of flooding in the next 100 years" and "has flooded multiple times in the past 30 years".

@SpaceKoala We really ought to stop issuing FEMA flood insurance for houses built on flood plains, they'll just keep doing it and the it only causes more suffering in the long term.

@AutumnStranded Somebody will likely acquire the Centaur V unit whole to keep SLS and Artemis operations smoothly flowing, but I just don't see anyone wanting to pay the Boeing-Lockheed asking price for all the pension liabilities as well.

Because somebody buying the company has to look at how it pay back the cost. And ULA has current launch contracts, yes, but is facing multiple partially or fully reusable competitors coming online who will almost certainly undercut them on cost. Basically, they're facing massively increased competition with a rocket that will struggle to keep up with a cutthroat market crowded with competitors that do not have the pension obligations, workforce size, or organizational inertia of ULA. Honestly, they're probably going to go bankrupt and the assests auctioned off.
Matthew Gialich@MattGialich

This company is for sale. Why is no one buying it? It's a working fucking rocket.

@Cosmic_Andrew1 Total valuation and market penetration are two very different things. And if Starlink is actually going to launch a mobile consumer service to directly compete with them, that's an incredibly tall order.

SpaceX’s market cap is 3x higher than the three “Goliath's” combined. Get out of here with the perpetual underdog everyone is out to get us non sense, it’s not 2012 anymore. Your Goliath by every metric and there is a whole lot of David’s behind you
Gwynne Shotwell@Gwynne_Shotwell

Weeeelllll, I guess @Starlink Mobile is doing something right! It’s David and Goliath (X3) all over again — I’m bettin’ on David :)
