Tonight, at 8.15pm Malaysia time, 66-year-old Asih (Ani Anggraeni) boards her flight home from KLIA to Jakarta after nearly 15 years in prison in Malaysia. She has survived endometrial cancer, a hysterectomy, and multiple incidents of abuse in prison before this moment.  Sentenced to death in 2012 for drug trafficking, Asih’s story of being deceived into the drug trade was dismissed by the Malaysian authorities until HAYAT met with her in early 2024. Under Malaysia’s abolition of the mandatory death penalty, Asih was resentenced to 30 years’ imprisonment; she was only due to be released in June 2031.  On 19 March 2026, a day before Raya, she was granted clemency by the Tuan Yang Terutama (TYT) Penang Tun Dato' Seri Utama Haji Ramli bin Ngah Talib.  In collaboration with @lbhmasyarakat and other partners over the past two years, not only have we managed to reunite a deceived, ailing grandmother with her family, but also uncovered that Asih’s passport was falsified before her arrest in Malaysia – a classic trait of human trafficking syndicates perpetuating transnational drug trade. Her case demonstrates the failures of having a domestic approach, including sentencing someone to death, towards an international problem.  But tonight, HAYAT celebrates Asih as a survivor. We convey our highest appreciation to the TYT Penang and all partners who have made it possible for Asih to go home.
