FBI warns Southeast Asia scam centers are operating on an “industrial scale,” with $2.9B lost in 2025 alone.
Sri Lankans are among victims of online “pig butchering” scams and some have reportedly been lured to these compounds with false overseas job promises.
FBI Warns of Expanding Southeast Asia Scam Networks; Sri Lankans Among Victims
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has intensified efforts to dismantle large-scale scam centers operating across Southeast Asia, warning that transnational crime syndicates are running fraud operations on an industrial scale.
Speaking at a virtual press briefing hosted by the U.S. State Department’s Asia Pacific Media Hub, Scott Schelble, Deputy Assistant Director of the FBI’s International Operations Division, said that scam centers are a regional problem requiring coordinated cross-border enforcement, adding that “geographical borders will not protect criminals who target victims.”
According to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), more than 80,000 complaints were recorded in 2025, with losses exceeding $2.9 billion. Authorities say victims are not limited to Americans — citizens across Asia, including Sri Lankans, have also been targeted in so-called “pig butchering” investment scams.
In addition to financial victims, regional law enforcement reports indicate that some Sri Lankans have been lured to scam compounds with promises of lucrative overseas jobs, only to find themselves forced into fraudulent operations under coercive conditions.
The FBI said it will continue working with Southeast Asian partners to disrupt financial networks, rescue trafficking victims, and make the region increasingly hostile to scam operations.

For everyone trying to reach your loved ones in disaster-affected areas, please stay hopeful. The majority of people are safe. Many are currently unreachable due to power outages and damaged communication towers, not because of harm.
Rescue and relief teams are actively working on the ground, and support is continuing despite difficult conditions. Keep faith, continue trying, and know that help is moving forward.
You are not alone. Stay strong. 💛
