How Ganga dominated Itihāsas while Sarasvati dominated Rgveda? Most people assume that ancient India was always centred on the Ganga. The evidence suggests otherwise. The oldest layer of Indian literature, the Ṛgveda, places its heartland not on the Ganga but on the Sarasvatī which is mentioned 75 times as its central river and primary civilisational lifeline. In Rgveda the Ganga is mentioned as an eastern fringe river only four times. The Sarasvatī is celebrated repeatedly as: "the greatest of rivers" (nadītamā) in Rgveda. Archaeology tells a similar story. Largest number of settlements - in thousands - of the Harappan / Sarasvati Sindhu Civilization are found in the Sarasvatī basin and its neighbouring regions. Then came one of the greatest climatic events in human history:- The 4.2 kiloyear aridity event (~2200 BCE). As the Sarasvatī weakened, populations gradually moved eastward. And something remarkable happened. The centres of power shifted too. The lineages remembered in Indian tradition appear to preserve this transition: Kuru (in Kurukṣetra along Sarasvati) > Pradīpa > Śantanu (Hastināpura on Ganga) Sagara (along Sarasvati) > Aṃśumat (along Yamuna that is Amshumati) > Bhagīratha (along Ganga that is Bhagirathi) > Aja, Dasaratha and Rama in Ayodhya along Sarayu From Sarasvatī.
