The "Inverse Problem" Of Dark Matter Is Insane What if 85% of the universe's matter isn't missing — it's just that our models were never clean enough to know? Dr. Jenny Wagner proves mathematically that every dark matter map ever made is extrapolation. The data only tells you something local. Everything else is a model assumption wearing the costume of evidence. She then connects this to Einstein's own 1917 warning — that homogeneity and isotropy were always a placeholder, never a truth — and makes the case that cosmology is not in crisis. It's finally ready for the next level of detail.

A physicist just told me that 85% of the universe’s “missing mass” may partly be a modeling artifact... Jenny Wagner is someone I didn’t expect to meet but I’m glad I did. She proves theorems about what the data can’t tell you. Then she shows where the standard model of cosmology silently fills gaps with assumptions. She calls it “CSI cosmology”: start from the evidence, not from the theory you like. It’s super interesting. What’s even more astounding is the cross‑disciplinary impact of this sort of approach. It may have drastic impact in particle physics, and even in cancer research. This goes beyond AI / traditional machine learning (she has a PhD in machine learning actually). In fact, a quantum chemistry thesis she read cracked a 30‑year‑old degeneracy problem in gravitational lensing that cosmologists couldn’t solve staying inside cosmology. Where else in physics are we confusing model artifacts for discoveries? curtjaimungal.com

Time travel in physics: We still don't know Listen in as JB @manchak, @ucirvine logic and philosophy of science professor, shares expertise on the Theories of Everything podcast with @TOEwithCurt. @UofCalifornia
Curt Jaimungal@TOEwithCurt

Out now: youtu.be/iGOGxaZZHwE What if you gathered every possible piece of evidence about the universe — every observation, past, present, and future — and it still wasn't enough? That's not a philosophical parlor trick. It's a theorem. J.B. Manchak proves it using the very tools of general relativity, and then connects it to Zen Buddhism's teaching on the self. This one is a quiet storm.

People don't always disagree with your reasoning, but they may dress it up as such. Instead, they disagree about the destination they think you’re arriving at. However, your opponent understands that not accepting an analysis not because of the analysis per se but rather because of what they believe you're advocating for is an intellectual faux pas. Thus, they disguise their bias by attacking the steps you take to arrive at your end. You can detect this via their asymmetrically deployed refutations. That is, when the attacks on your steps aren’t directed toward others whose destinations they deem compatible with their politics.

Shallowness now wears the robe of eloquence. A calculator never tempted anyone to think that the calculator “understands” arithmetic. At least no where near to the same degree that LLMs tempt people into thinking that they themselves understand what the LLM is outputting. The output was always a proxy. We never knew this until LLMs came along. Many tests are like this. We thought the Turing Test was a test of consciousness (or at minimum machine thinking). Once it was achieved, we moved the alleged goalpost. However, it’s not a fallacy in this case like most people think. It’s not a fallacy because we realized how wretched the measurement was. Unfortunately, much of the time the only way to realize the wretchedness of a measurement is to reach the goalpost. It measures up until a point. Only then do we realize what we thought was God was an idol.

General relativity isn’t one theory. It’s actually a family of variants. This means whether the universe is deterministic or not depends on which version you pick. Further, most who say “general relativity forbids time travel” may have quietly assumed what they’re trying to prove. Manchak’s work shows a certain pattern: add an assumption, derive a conclusion, then forget the assumption was doing all the heavy lifting. Super interesting. LINK IN REPLY

Whoops. Some articles were supposed to be shown ON SCREEN while I said their quotes in the beginning at 0:26. I forgot to overlay them. - "...a severe failure of determinism in general relativity that cannot be taken lightly in view of the importance in modern cosmology" sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/… - "As a consequence, Einstein's general theory of relativity is not a deterministic theory; there is a lack of predictability." people.kth.se/~hansr/Cauchyp… - "Does general relativity violate determinism inside charged black holes?" physicsworld.com/a/does-general… Of course, watch the full video for context and the description box there contains far more links youtu.be/tJsghrZQaYU

Out now: youtu.be/tJsghrZQaYU Many people think physics / reality is either guided by a probabilistic distribution or is “determined.” Actually, there’s a third, far‐more unsettling option. Curt Jaimungal explains why Einstein’s general relativity isn't actually deterministic. He discusses how Cauchy horizons and closed time-like curves break predictability, showing that math and physics don't always guarantee a set future for our universe. This is a solo deep‑dive. One that he's been meaning to make for a while.

Because we can simulate X on a computer, doesn't mean X is simulated in reality.

Cool news! BBC just did a mini-documentary on me for their series Sideways. It's now out for everyone. It covers what it's like to explore ideas of existence / truth / the self / fundamental physics, etc. and how it can be all destabilizing but almost no one talks about the perils. I think it was fantastically produced. Here are some ways of listening: - BBC: bbc.com/audio/play/m00… - iTunes: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sid… - Spotify: open.spotify.com/show/3h6zti31h…
