Western CO handed Fort Lewis its 4th consecutive loss and kept their own playoff hopes alive with a big 85-77 win over the Skyhawks on Saturday (2/14/26). The Mountaineers got the win by shooting 50% from the field, including 40% from behind the arc, while holding Fort Lewis to 37.3% shooting, including 31.6% from the 3 point line. Aidan McDowell scored 27 points, giving him 649 points for the season. Currently, McDowell is the D2 scoring leader, as he is 59 points ahead of Young Harris’ Carl Cleveland, who is currently in 2nd place with 590 points. Leading Western CO to the win were: 🏀 Aidan McDowell, 27 Pts, 5 Rebs, & 1 Ast; 🏀 Jordan Kuac, 15 Pts & 6 Rebs; 🏀 Dawlton Grant, 11 Pts, 3 Rebs, & 1 Ast; 🏀 Quincy Scott, 10 Pts, 9 Rebs, & 1 Ast; 🏀 Reece Strawn, 9 Pts, 2 Rebs, & 2 Asts; & 🏀 Tyler Halligan, 8 Pts, 5 Rebs, & 3 Asts. The Mountaineers need two big wins against Westminster and Mesa this week, as well as some help from a few other teams to keep their playoff hopes alive. Western CO is 2-0 in conference play after winning their 2nd consecutive road nail biter, beating CSU Pueblo 62-60 yesterday afternoon (12/6/25). Coach Claus has an extremely talented team in Gunnison this season, led by the Mountaineer veteran, Jr. Tyler Halligan, and the extremely talented newcomer, So. Aiden McDowell. Against Pueblo, Halligan and McDowell combined for 38 points, scoring 16 and 22 respectively. Halligan shot 66.7% from the field, going 6 for 9, while McDowell shot 50% from behind the arc, going 3 for 6, and shot 87.5% from the free throw line, making 7 of 8, including 2 huge free throws with 8 seconds remaining in the game to give the Mountaineers a 1 point lead. Leading Western CO to the win were: 🏀 Aidan McDowell, 22 Pts, 3 Rebs, & 5 Asts; 🏀 Tyler Halligan, 16 Pts, 6 Rebs, & 5 Asts; & 🏀 Jordan Kuac, 10 Pts, 6 Rebs, & 4 Asts. Coach Claus has the Mountaineers gelling nicely and will be looking to build off of last week’s momentum when his team hosts MSU Denver and Regis this week.
