Uche Medoh
@UcheMedoh
Principal Investigator at the Arc Institute. My lab employs chemical biology to study organelle metabolism, aging, and age-related diseases.

For solving a 50-year mystery by uncovering the machinery behind BMP, a molecule with protective effects against various disorders, Uche Medoh is the winner of the 2025 Science & SciLifeLab Prize for Young Scientists. 🎉 Learn more about the work: scim.ag/48bgsGV

Valthos builds next-generation biodefense. Of all AI applications, biotechnology has the highest upside and most catastrophic downside. Heroes at the frontlines of biodefense are working every day to protect the world against the worst case. But the pace of biotech is against them: more powerful methods to design biological systems, with near-universal access, open up an increasing surface area of threats. In this new world, the only way forward is to be faster. So we set out to build the tech stack for biodefense. Our team of computational biologists and software engineers applies frontier AI to identify biological threats and update medical countermeasures in real-time. We are backed by $30M from @OpenAI, @Lux_Capital, @foundersfund and others including @Definition_Cap. We are actively hiring engineers to join in the mission - if that sounds like you, get in touch.

Former CBI student @UcheMedoh uncovered the function of a protein that makes a fat molecule called BMP. When this machinery fails, it leads to toxic waste build-up in neurons, revealing a missing link that could lead to treatments of neurological diseases: stanford.io/4l23ApY

Big News: Thrilled to share that my latest PhD work is now published in @Nature. We identify PLA2G15 as the lysosomal BMP hydrolase and show that blocking it improves outcomes in a severe neurodegenerative disease model. Read the article here tinyurl.com/3b9zt5fw (1/7)

Taking omega-3 and vitamin D supplements over a three-year period slowed biological ageing by three to four months, particularly when combined with exercise. go.nature.com/4jJGnJv

A new Science study presents “Evo”—a machine learning model capable of decoding and designing DNA, RNA, and protein sequences, from molecular to genome scale, with unparalleled accuracy. Evo’s ability to predict, generate, and engineer entire genomic sequences could change the way synthetic biology is done. Learn more in this week's issue: bit.ly/3OsmUPr

@Nature @CellCellPress The graduate paper of the year goes to @UcheMedoh of the @abu_remaileh lab for his @ScienceMagazine paper on "The Batten disease gene product CLN5 is the lysosomal bis(monoacylglycero)phosphate synthase."
