A new deal that will bear down on small boat crossings. One that will put smugglers behind bars and restore order and control to our borders.

Today I have struck a new agreement with the French Government to bear down on people smugglers and migrants boarding small boats.

A new detention centre in Dunkirk will fast-track the deportation of hundreds of illegal migrants each year before they are able to reach the UK. For the first time, officers will prioritise the removal of migrants from the ten nationalities most likely to cross the Channel.

These tactics, as well as the use of a new vessel and an increase of more than 20 maritime officers, will continue to target taxi boats picking up migrants in the Channel.

In the last two months, the French have stopped six migrant taxi boats, returning all migrants to France and sentencing five smugglers to prison and deportation.

French enforcement teams are expanding their ability to intercept small boats at sea before they reach the UK. Specialist maritime tactics will see officers able to intercept taxi boats and return migrants to France.

A new riot police unit will be deployed to French beaches, using specialist tactics to prevent illegal migrants from making crossings. An expanded intelligence and judicial unit will also ramp up the arrest and prosecution of smugglers across the region.

Taxpayers expect to see a return when their money is spent. For the first time, the funding uplift in our agreement with France will be conditional on results and reducing migrants coming to the UK. If the new tactics are not successful, funding will stop after one year.

An honour to meet the Chief Rabbi today. I know this is a time of deep concern for our Jewish community, following a series of vile antisemitic attacks. We stand in solidarity. We have stepped up security for the Jewish community across the UK. But as well as treating the symptoms, we must address the causes - by tackling the roots of antisemitism.

A memorial angel sculpture in bronze has been unveiled to mark the centenary of Queen Elizabeth II’s birth. Eleanor Crook’s sculpture forms part of a new collection of works by six artists to commemorate the Lying-in-State of Elizabeth II.

Today, on what would have been her 100th birthday, we remember Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and reflect on a lifetime devoted to public service.

Every week, planes lift off from the UK to remove or deport illegal migrants and foreign criminals.

Taxpayers should not be footing millions of pounds to accommodate families who have no right to be in the UK, especially when other asylum seekers comply with the rules and leave the UK when required. We are acting to remove them quickly, cut hotel use and slash costs.

Eleven more asylum hotels have shut to illegal migrants and are being given back to communities. These latest hotel closures alone will save the taxpayer £65 million a year, adding to the almost £1 billion already saved on asylum costs.

The brutal, senseless murders of Bebe, Elsie and Alice marked one of the darkest moments in our country’s history. The report today is truly harrowing and profoundly disturbing. It sets out systematic failures that led to this terrible event. I’ve been overwhelmed by the bravery and determination of their families and while nothing will ever bring these three little girls back, I’m determined to make the fundamental changes needed to keep the public safe. I will do everything I can to honour the memory of Bebe, Elsie, and Alice.

On 29th July 2024, three senseless killings took place in Southport. Today’s findings show that the state systematically failed to stop this atrocity. This government has already taken action, and we will do whatever is needed to prevent this tragedy from happening again.
