At Union Rescue Mission, transformation happens in many forms—and in our kitchens, it begins with the opportunity to learn, grow, and serve. Through URM’s Culinary Internship Program, guests gain hands-on experience in a professional kitchen under the leadership of Delilah Cannon, URM’s Kitchen Manager. From learning their way around the kitchen to developing knife skills, food safety, preparation, and presentation, interns build confidence, discipline, and teamwork every step of the way. Our after-school program at Hope Gardens brings learning to life every Thursday afternoon. Through our Critter Class, in partnership with the Bear Program and Fenton Charter Schools, youth engage with a variety of animals and reptiles—including the opportunity to safely interact with snakes—in a hands-on, interactive environment. These moments spark curiosity, build confidence, and create meaningful learning experiences outside the classroom. This past Friday, we had another wonderful Mommy & Me class in our recreation room in Downtown LA. Families enjoyed time together through arts and crafts, free play, and meaningful connection in a safe and welcoming space. It’s always special to see parents and children building memories and community together. Today, PPG Aerospace visited Hope Gardens for a special job fair, interviewing women for employment opportunities. This partnership is especially meaningful because URM CEO Mark Hood spent decades as an executive at PPG before joining Union Rescue Mission, and first came to love URM while volunteering at Hope Gardens. Since then, a few graduates of Damascus, Hope Gardens’ recovery program, have joined the PPG team in jobs that provide a livable wage. Today, more women had the opportunity to take that next step. We’re grateful for companies like PPG that invest in the community and help create life-changing solutions for neighbors experiencing homelessness. Last Saturday, we were incredibly blessed by volunteers from All Nations Church—faithful partners who have been serving alongside us for over 7 years. Mommy & Me Open Play at our Downtown LA campus was full of laughter, creativity, and connection! Families gathered in our newly created third-floor recreation room where little ones (ages 0–5) had space to play, color, explore, and bond with their parents. This special time gave families the opportunity to slow down, share moments together, and build memories in a safe and welcoming environment.
