🤖 @axisrobotics : They Don’t Sell a Fixed Product - They Sell Results Tailored to Each Customer
In the fast-growing field of Physical AI (robots powered by artificial intelligence), most companies build one product and try to sell it to everyone. Axis Robotics takes a different approach: they build one strong system, but flexibly adjust what they deliver depending on the customer’s needs.
Here’s how they do it, explained simply and clearly.
1. Same System, Two Completely Different Deliverables
Recently, Axis delivered a training dataset of 35 task packages to an AI company.
They didn’t just send raw data. They also created clear visualizations so the partner could easily understand:
- Maps showing where the robot moves in each of the
35 tasks → making it obvious which tasks need a lot
of space and which ones are more compact.
- Trajectory visualizations → for example, a “reach
target pose” task has short, direct movements,
while a “peg into hole” task requires longer, more
precise actions like alignment and insertion.
This way, the AI company doesn’t just receive data - they understand what skills each task actually teaches the robot.
For hardware partners (companies that already have real robots), Axis delivers something very different:
They connect the customer’s real robot directly into their system. Humans control the robot using VR, collect real-world data, fine-tune the model, and then run it on the customer’s actual robot.
Key point: Axis is not selling one fixed product. They are selling customized results that match what each customer actually needs.
2. How Do They Make This Possible?
Axis built one unified pipeline with these main steps:
1. Clearly define the specific task the robot needs to
learn.
2. Collect data — mostly through simulation (for
speed and variety) and combine it with real-world
data when necessary.
3. Clean the data (remove unnecessary movements,
jitter, or idle time).
4. Enhance the data to make it more useful and
diverse.
5. Train or fine-tune the AI model.
6. Deliver the final result to the customer.
Because they have this single, well-organized system, Axis only needs to change the last step to serve different customers:
- For AI companies → deliver a well-organized and visualized dataset.
- For hardware companies → deliver a complete workflow that works on real robots.
They also maintain physical robot labs in Berkeley (USA) and Shanghai (China) to test and support real-world deployments.
3. What Have They Actually Delivered?
- A visualized training dataset of 35 tasks for an AI partner.
- Full real-robot workflows for hardware partners (including videos of humanoid robots performing pick-and-place tasks controlled via VR).
- Public benchmark results showing their data improves robot performance significantly on standard tests.
- Open-sourced some of their tools so others can use and build on them.
4. Why Is This Approach Smart?
- Saves customers time and effort: Customers don’t have to collect data or build everything from scratch. Axis handles the hard parts and delivers ready-to-use results.
- Solves a real industry problem: High-quality robot training data is scarce and expensive. Axis uses simulation to generate large amounts of diverse data quickly, then adds real-world data for accuracy.
- Highly flexible: An AI company needs good training data → Axis gives them a dataset. A hardware company needs to deploy on real robots → Axis gives them the full deployment workflow. Same system, different outputs.
