President Trump wants Congress to pass the SAVE Act. He says it's about voter fraud. Some form of voter ID could make sense. But this particular bill could also block millions of eligible Americans from casting a ballot. Meanwhile, the country is deeply divided; public faith in free and fair elections is slipping fast. Our democracy runs on trustworthy elections — and right now that trust is imperiled. Is a “grand bargain” on voting possible? What would a comprehensive agreement that restored confidence on all sides actually look like? I share a few ideas about that here.

I am back after attending two days of celebration of life ceremonies for the Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson. I was blown away and humbled by how much impact one human life can have. Reverend Jackson was born in segregation and poverty. Yet three former U.S. presidents, a former U.S. vice president and three sitting heads of state were among the thousands of people who showed up for his funerals. My “World War 3 + Gray War” post yesterday sparked a lot of commentary, with some casting doubt on my grasp of foreign policy. Meanwhile, I’m here in Chicago to pay my respects to one of my greatest heroes. So I’ll let him handle this one. Rev. Jesse Jackson. Chicago. 1984.

Something strange is happening in the information war. Young Americans defending regimes like the Islamic Republic of Iran that jail protesters, strip women of rights and execute people for being gay. Self-described patriots on the right suddenly echoing narratives that benefit a country like Russia — which is openly hostile to the United States. How does that happen? Not through tanks or missiles. Post by post, people get pulled into camps that don’t actually serve their own country or their own values. They become pieces on a chessboard in a GRAY WAR — a conflict fought with information instead of bullets. And most people don’t even realize they’re part of it. The battlefield isn’t overseas anymore — it’s in your feed.
