Saw this beautifully Chinese-style Virgin Mary statue at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Taiyuan. She has distinctly Eastern features, resembling Guanyin Bodhisattva, and her drapery echoes the classic “Cao-style drapery” 曹衣带水(wet-clinging silk effect) from Northern and Southern Dynasties sculpture (420–589 AD). Crafted in 2005 by Prof. Zhang Wei of the Central Academy of Fine Arts Sculpture Department (himself a Catholic). Taiyuan Cathedral, first built in 1870 (Tongzhi era, Qing), burned in 1900 (Boxer Rebellion), and rebuilt in 1903.
