His legacy will continue to be reflected through the Cautley Cup for the RMVCC - a challenging two-day course where cadets’ teamwork, navigation, and communication are put to the ultimate test.

125 years ago, the Volunteer Cadet Corps was founded to develop discipline, leadership and service in young people. Today, that mission continues. Throughout 2026 we celebrate VCC125 - honouring our heritage, our volunteers, and the next generation of leaders. #VCC125

Today the @VCCcadets signed the Armed Forces Covenant in the Great Cabin of HMS Victory. Signed by RAdm Rose OBE RN, Dir P&T on behalf of @DefenceHQ & WO2 Russ Piner RM, Comd VCC. A milestone in our 125th anniversary year, linking proud heritage with our future transformation.

125 years on, the VCC is a proud, inclusive organisation shaping generations through training, education and service. From mischief to mission - still meeting the challenge. #VCC125

Instead of punishment, the Adjutant was tasked with finding a constructive way to channel that youthful energy. On 14 February 1901, at Royal Marines Barracks Eastney, the Volunteer Cadet Corps was born - led by its first Commanding Officer, Captain William Harkness RMA.
