VHM celebrates #IndigenousPeoplesDay! We encourage all to understand the layered history of Venice’s past & future. Before the canals, this marshland that we now call Venice was the exclusive territory and unceded of the Gabrieleño/Tongva People in the area of Sa’anga.

County since long before colonization & industrialization drastically changed the region. Today, as we face the increasing threat of a changing climate, the Venetians and Angelenos with Gabrieleño/Tongva roots continue to remind us of our inseparable bonds with the Earth.

The legacy of Venice is dependent on the legacy of the communities that thrived here for many centuries prior to 1905 & who carry on and share their culture and traditions today. Indigenous people have lived in connection with both the land and the water all across Los Angeles –
