It’s a 3D printer and automated assembly station in one. Developed at Meiji University, the Functgraph begins as a standard 3D printer, then transforms into a compact manufacturing system. It can print parts for its own tools, collect them, clean them, and assemble them without human input. Rather than only producing objects, Functgraph can carry out real physical tasks such as folding laundry or slicing vegetables by creating and assembling task-specific tools. For decades, system-on-chip (SoC) design focused on increasing compute performance through smaller transistors, faster clocks, more parallelism, and specialized processors. Today, that model is changing. As SoCs become more complex with AI workloads, heterogeneous integration, and new system demands, performance depends less on raw compute power and more on efficient data movement. Many chips are now data-movement-bound rather than compute-bound. Bandwidth, latency, and energy-efficient communication across the chip have become critical challenges. Adding more compute units no longer guarantees better performance if those resources cannot access data fast enough. This article discusses how @arteris_noc is helping address this shift through advanced on-chip interconnect solutions. Learn more: wevlv.co/48z0rKQ #engineering #semiconductors #SOCs

MIT researchers have developed a new bionic knee that can help people with above-the-knee amputations walk faster, climb stairs, and avoid obstacles more easily than they could with a traditional prosthesis. Unlike prostheses in which the residual limb sits within a socket, the new system is directly integrated with the user’s muscle and bone tissue. This enables greater stability and gives the user much more control over the movement of the prosthesis. Participants in a small clinical study also reported that the limb felt more like a part of their own body, compared to people who had more traditional above-the-knee amputations. [Hardmode Hackathon 2026 - Project Highlight] Meet Human Operator! Human Operator is a human augmentation tool that allows AI to briefly take control of your body to help you learn and do things you normally cannot do. To do this, it uses a Vision-Language Model for human motor control through Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS). Vision-based commands are generated via open-ended speech input through the Claude API to control finger and wrist stimulation for intuitive on-body interaction. Human Operator was the winning project at MIT Hard Mode 2026 (Learn Track) Team: Peter He, Valdemar Danry, Daniel Kaijzer, Yutong Wu, Ashley Neall, Sean Lewis Video credit: @medialab #engineering #technology #mit #ai #artificialintelligence

Engineers have designed a wristband that lets wearers control a robotic hand with their own movements. By moving their hands and fingers, users can direct a robot to play piano or shoot a basketball, or manipulate objects in a virtual environment. Video: Melanie Gonick/MIT News #robots #robotics #mit

Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) are reshaping how we sense the world. By merging multiple optical functions onto a single chip, they enable sensors that are smaller, faster, and more energy-efficient than traditional electronic systems. From environmental monitoring and medical diagnostics to autonomous systems and industrial inspection, PIC-based sensing is enabling new levels of precision and scalability. The latest advances show how light, not just electricity, can carry and process information directly on-chip. This shift is paving the way for ultra-sensitive, real-time detection technologies that could transform industries. XPENG AeroHT is a subsidiary of Chinese EV maker XPeng focused on personal flying vehicles and eVTOL transport. Its best-known concepts are the two-seat XPENG X2 and the modular Land Aircraft Carrier, a road vehicle that carries a detachable aircraft. The Land Aircraft Carrier is designed as a two-part system: a ground module for driving, charging, and transporting the aircraft, plus an air module for short, low-altitude flights. The idea is to combine road travel with on-demand flight rather than replace normal cars entirely. What are your thoughts on this concept? A Taiwanese startup is rethinking what a SCARA robot can do. They developed a robot that outperforms typical SCARA models in speed, stability, and space efficiency. Unlike most conventional arms, it can also move smoothly through singularity positions, where many robots lose control or need complex workarounds. That matters more than it sounds. Singularity limits often prevent standard industrial robots from handling certain tasks. Solving it could unlock more advanced automation in tighter, more demanding spaces.
