The pain is real, but let’s look at the numbers. The Naira lost 70% value (₦460 to ₦1,500+) and purchasing power evaporated because of 30% inflation. That’s the "cost of living" reality.
But here is the "cost of survival" reality:
If the subsidy stayed, the govt would’ve gone bankrupt by now, borrowing just to pay salaries. In 2023, we spent 97% of revenue on debt; subsidy was costing ₦400B/month. We were basically a zombie economy. If we never had it at all, the $35B wasted over 20 years could’ve built our refineries and fixed the national grid.
