Who taught us to shame victims? Speaking up about violence already takes immense courage. Yet when survivors take that brave step to share their stories, they are often met with suspicion, judgment, and blame. Sometimes these reactions come from misunderstanding rather than malice, but the impact is the same. They deepen the silence and reinforce the stigma survivors face. Breaking this cycle starts with all of us. So we ask: How intentional are we about listening without judgment, challenging harmful narratives, and standing with survivors when women speak up? At just 18, “Zainab” (not her real name) entered a polygamous marriage in North Central Nigeria with hopes of care, stability, and protection. Instead, she encountered hostility, emotional abuse, and deep isolation. When she sought divorce, her path to freedom came at a steep price. Unlike another woman in her community who was granted a divorce without refunding her bride price, Zainab was told she had to repay ₦600,000 before she could be released. “I was neither married nor divorced. I was just stuck. That was an injustice. I paid because I needed my freedom,” she recalls. After prolonged negotiations and legal struggles, she secured her release. Today, Zainab is rebuilding her life through a small food business, channeling her pain into purpose and independence. Her story reflects the systemic barriers many women face in abusive marriages — including financial coercion, unequal interpretations of religious and customary laws, and limited access to affordable justice. Zainab’s experience underscores the urgent need for: * Affordable and accessible divorce processes * Gender-sensitive training for judges and clerics * Financial support systems for survivors * Stronger enforcement of women’s rights protections Despite the obstacles, Zainab’s journey is one of resilience. In Minna, the desire to work, learn, and build better livelihoods already exists, what is often missing is access to the right tools and structured support. Skills acquisition centres help bridge that gap by turning willingness into capacity, making the commissioning of a Skills Acquisition Centre in Minna, Niger State, on 15 February 2026 both timely and important. Beyond the event, WRAPA also used the opportunity to strengthen operations at the Niger State Office through the formal handover of essential office equipment. These tools will enhance coordination and service delivery at the state level.
