I am appalled by the targeting of two Kiva’s Bagel Bar locations — fixtures of Toronto’s Jewish community that have long served as places for people to gather and connect. Jewish Canadians should be able to live, work, and worship free from fear, intimidation, and hate. Canada’s government is absolute in our commitment to combatting the scourge of antisemitism. Law enforcement has my full support as they conduct a thorough investigation and hold those responsible to account.

I’m appalled by the targeting of two Jewish-owned bakeries in Toronto. Antisemitism has no place in our communities, and it is an attack on the values of inclusion and respect that define our country. I stand with the community as authorities hold those responsible accountable.

What happened yesterday in the village of Tell should serve as a wake-up call for both Palestinians and Israelis. It demonstrates the success of those who are working relentlessly to ignite the West Bank and drag it into a cycle of widespread violence, with the clear backing of influential Israeli ministers. Over the past four years, Ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich have overseen policies that armed extremist settler groups, strengthened their capabilities, and created a system of political and institutional protection for them. According to numerous reports and testimonies, this protection has extended to elements within Israeli army reserve units. At the same time, there has been a dangerous failure by law enforcement authorities—particularly the police and Border Police—and a troubling absence of effective action by Israel's security establishment, including the Shin Bet, to confront this growing threat. The bloodshed that took place yesterday in Tell is not the responsibility of those who carried out the attack alone. Responsibility also lies with this extremist and dysfunctional system that enabled violent extremism to grow, shielded those responsible, and failed to uphold the rule of law. Unless these policies are brought to an end, both Palestinians and Israelis will pay the price. No one will be spared the consequences of allowing violence and extremism to continue unchecked.

Two months ago, we started negotiating a new free trade agreement with the UAE. Today, we concluded those negotiations. That means lower tariffs, new opportunities for Canadian workers, and better access to the UAE’s $700 billion economy for Canadian businesses.

I welcome today's coverage by @Jerusalem_Post and @TheMediaLine of my statement regarding the upcoming Palestinian legislative elections expected in November. The statement highlights three issues that deserve urgent international attention: • The historic opportunity for Palestinians to elect a new leadership after more than two decades without legislative elections. • The urgent need for a Political Parties Law that guarantees equal rights and a level playing field for all political movements before the elections. • The increasing pressure on emerging political forces, including the recent summoning of several Masar Jadid (New Path) activists by the Palestinian General Intelligence Service, in what we view as attempts to intimidate and restrict legitimate political activity. If these elections are to be credible, they must be free, fair, competitive, and conducted under equal legal conditions for all participants. Palestinians deserve genuine democratic choice. Democratic legitimacy is essential not only for the future of Palestine, but also for building a lasting peace and a stable future for both Palestinians and Israelis. jpost.com/middle-east/ar… themedialine.org/headlines/new-…

I am appalled by the attempted arson of Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom in Montréal overnight. I am relieved nobody was injured and that a suspect has been apprehended. Law enforcement has our full support as they work to bring justice to the community. Across our country, antisemitism has surged. Nothing can justify the hate, discrimination, and violence that Jewish Canadians are experiencing right now. It is up to all of us to name this hate and confront it. We will continue to bring forward concrete measures to combat antisemitism, using all of the tools at our disposal. We must build a better, more just country in which Jewish Canadians will always be able to live their lives safely, openly, and freely.

An attack on a synagogue is an attack on us all. The rise of antisemitism in our country must be named and confronted, not ignored — the Prime Minister wholeheartedly agreed when we spoke today. Our government is strengthening laws and increasing funding for security, because there is no place for this hatred anywhere in Canada. I am relieved that no one was hurt and that a suspect is now in custody. This morning I spoke with Rabbi Grushcow to offer our government’s support to everyone at Temple. To the Temple community, know that your neighbours stand with you.

The $ 145 million for community security is important. the standalone hate provision in the Combatting Hate Act can lead to a longer sentence for this crime but bottom line the law must be enforced. Prosecutors must act to prosecute anti-Jewish hate crimes with seriousness. 2/2
Anthony Housefather@AHousefather

I am deeply appreciative of the work by @FederationCJA and Westmount security and the @SPVM leading to the quick arrest of the suspect at the Temple this morning. The person responsible for this reprehensible act must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. 1/2

Yesterday, I joined Prime Minister Mark Carney, colleagues, and members of the Jewish community at Holy Blossom Temple for a critical call to action against the rising scourge of antisemitism in Canada. At a time when Jewish Canadians are facing unprecedented levels of antisemitism, the Prime Minister stood in solidarity and spoke candidly about the crisis, and why no one should feel unsafe because of who they are, how they pray, or the identity they carry. He outlined the new and important anti-hate legislation and the critical new security measures, but just as importantly, he spoke about how all Canadians must stand together to fight antisemitism.

To combat antisemitism, we must first admit that Canada’s civic compact is failing Jewish Canadians.

As we face a horrifying rise in hate, the new Council will help bring communities together and confront racism & hatred across Canada. Every Canadian — including Jewish Canadians — deserves to live in safety, dignity, and free from fear in our country. ➡️

This is vile. Joining the call for law enforcement to respond. This is hatred and it should horrify all of us. The Canada I know and Canadians stand for peaceful, meaningful coexistence with all our neighbours and communities across this country. Enough - this hate must stop.
Anthony Housefather@AHousefather

Hanging an image of a Jew with a kippah in effigy is disgusting, antisemitic and clear incitement to hatred. I appreciate that @MrLeslieRoberts the city councillor for the downtown district has reached out to the @SPVM on this & I have done the same.

Agree 100% We need more open discussion and less polarizing rhetoric. Thank you @LTCPeterLerner and @jstreetdotorg
Lt. Col. (R) Peter Lerner@LTCPeterLerner

I’m an Israeli. I served my country, defended it, represented it, and continue to fight for its future because I love it deeply. And precisely because of that, I find the attacks on @jstreetdotorg so disturbing. You don’t have to agree with every statement or policy position to recognize that J Street is part of the Jewish and Zionist conversation. Many of the people involved care deeply about Israel, its security, and its future as both a Jewish and democratic state. What troubles me most is this growing idea that only one kind of Jew, one kind of Zionist, or one kind of supporter of Israel is legitimate. That anyone who asks difficult questions, speaks about democracy, human rights, or the moral direction of our country is somehow an enemy. I reject that completely. Israel was never meant to be a place of enforced political conformity. The strength of our society has always come from argument, diversity, and the courage to challenge ourselves, especially in difficult times. @yechielleiter comments don’t protect Israel. They shrink it. They push away people who still choose, every single day, to stand with Israel even when it’s hard. As a liberal Israeli, I will always defend our right to disagree with one another without erasing one another.

Yesterday, Russia launched one of its largest drone and missile attacks on Ukraine in four years. Canada unequivocally condemns these indiscriminate attacks. I express my deepest condolences to those injured and everyone mourning their loved ones. Canada stands with Ukraine as it defends itself against this unconscionable aggression and we will work with allies to sustain pressure on Russia to bring this conflict to an end.
