NEWS | Zimbabwe unveils ambitious local tech brand built for the world stage
HARARE – Zimbabwe’s push to transform itself from a consumer of foreign technology into a producer of locally built innovation took centre stage in Harare as ICT Minister Tatenda Mavetera threw government support behind the launch of Avantis laptops, a new Zimbabwean computing brand positioning itself for both African and global markets.
Surrounded by sleek new laptops, LED-lit displays and a crowd of government officials, entrepreneurs and technology executives, Minister Mavetera framed the arrival of Avantis not merely as a product launch, but as a signal of the country’s growing digital ambitions.
“We need to make sure that we are not only importers of technology, but we also need to be exporters,” she said. “We need to make sure that as much as we are consumers, we are also producers.”
The remarks came as Zimbabwean technology company Avantis officially unveiled a new range of locally assembled laptops positioned as a home-grown alternative in a market long dominated by global brands. The devices, powered by the company’s Ultra-chip technology, are designed around speed, energy efficiency, and accessibility, targeting students, professionals, creatives, and businesses.
For years, conversations around Africa’s role in global technology have largely centered on software, mobile payments, and digital services. Hardware manufacturing has remained a far more difficult frontier, requiring capital, supply chains, technical expertise, and regulatory backing. That is partly why the launch carried symbolic weight.
Minister Mavetera repeatedly linked the emergence of Avantis to the government’s wider digital transformation agenda, including plans for a national Devices for All initiative aimed at improving digital literacy by 2030.
“We are so grateful as government that we are having our own locals coming up, assembling and partly manufacturing new products,” she said. “All we can do as government is to fully support and make sure these initiatives take center stage.”
The launch also arrives as Zimbabwe pushes deeper into artificial intelligence policy and innovation development. Mavetera pointed to the country’s AI strategy and an upcoming AI Green Challenge expected to launch in July, where young innovators will be encouraged to develop artificial intelligence prototypes and practical solutions.
“We want young people to innovate as much as they can,” she said. “I’ve got an open-door policy.”
Her comments reflected a broader attempt to reposition Zimbabwe’s ICT sector from one driven largely by imports and consumption into one increasingly focused on local production and innovation ecosystems. The government’s innovation fund, managed under the ministry through POTRAZ, is expected to play a role in supporting startups and emerging developers.
At the center of the Harare launch, however, was the product itself. Avantis says its latest devices are engineered to meet international standards while remaining affordable for local consumers, a balance many African technology companies have struggled to achieve. The laptops feature lightweight premium builds and are marketed as capable of handling everything from university coursework and office tasks to demanding creative workloads.
For Minister Mavetera, the significance of the moment extended beyond the hardware on display.
“We are there to support,” she said. “We are there to make sure that we are ready for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.”

NEWS | “Only God” can reward nurses, says deputy minister amid pay crisis
HARARE – As Zimbabwe’s nurses intensified demands for salaries of between US$600 and US$800 amid worsening working conditions and a deepening crisis in the public health sector, Deputy Health and Child Care Minister Sleiman Kwidini delivered an extraordinary and emotionally charged address during International Nurses Day commemorations in Harare, telling nurses that no human being could ever truly pay them for the work they do and that “only God can reward a nurse.”
Speaking before nurses, hospital executives, students and government officials at The Avenues Clinic on Monday, Kwidini acknowledged the mounting anger sweeping through Zimbabwe’s nursing profession but simultaneously warned against expectations the government could “break the bank” to meet their demands.
“We were laughing the other day, discussing the industrial action by public health institution nurses,” Kwidini said. “We asked ourselves if there is anyone in this world with the capacity to adequately pay a nurse. A nurse can not be paid by anyone, and only God can reward a nurse.”
The remarks landed at a volatile moment for the country’s health sector, with nurses engaged in protests and strikes over salaries reportedly ranging between less than US$300 and US$500 per month, deteriorating hospital conditions and shortages of essential equipment.
Kwidini openly admitted government limitations while insisting nurses’ welfare would only improve gradually.
“Even if as nurses you demand any amount of money, it can never be enough,” he said. “It doesn’t make sense to break the bank for nurses, yet we do not have enough money, that would be a lie, but your welfare will be gradually improved.”
In one of the most politically sensitive sections of his address, the deputy minister defended government-backed renovations of nurses’ accommodation at Parirenyatwa Hospital after criticism erupted online questioning, why refurbishment projects were prioritised while salaries remained low.
“We realised that the renovations at Parirenyatwa Hospital caused some tension on social media,” he said. “Some argued why priority was given to refurbishment of nurses’ houses, but the reality is patient care starts when the welfare of the nurse is catered for and we will not compromise.”
Kwidini repeatedly returned to the emotional and psychological burden carried by nurses, describing hospital environments as places few Zimbabweans could endure.
“Ask anyone to be in a hospital setup for a few hours,” he said. “They end up uncomfortable and end up saying inhumane remarks about patients, which shows how delicate your job is.”
But the deputy minister also turned his fire inward toward the profession itself, condemning what he described as a culture of mistrust and negative attitudes among nurses.
“When a nurse falls sick, they opt to seek care from nurses from other stations away from their own because of this behavior that you display which is negative,” he said. “I don’t know of any nurse who would take their sick parent to their workstation for care with their direct colleagues, and this attitude must shift.”
The speech laid bare the difficult balancing act confronting government officials as pressure intensifies from healthcare workers demanding immediate intervention while treasury constraints continue to dominate state responses.
Kwidini said President Emmerson Mnangagwa appreciated the role of nurses and supported improved remuneration “according to what we have as a country,” while also acknowledging that those currently agitating for reforms may not personally benefit from the changes they initiate.
“You have initiated conversation and dialogue on welfare,” he said. “But at times it is not you who will benefit, it is those that come after you.”

WATCH VIDEO | “Only God” can repay nurses for the pressure they endure, says deputy minister
“Only God” can truly reward a nurse, and the government can not “break the bank” to meet escalating salary demands. Those were the explosive remarks made by Deputy Health Minister Sleiman Kwidini during International Nurses Day commemorations held Tuesday at The Avenues Clinic, as frustration over low pay and worsening conditions continues to boil over across Zimbabwe’s health sector.
