My nephew was involved in ghastly road traffic accident and I’ve spent the greater part of the last 36 hours at the Trauma Centre of the Uthman DanFodio University (@UDUSOK) Teaching Hospital (UDUTH) in my home city of #Sokoto. He arrived at the centre in a really bad shape with various injuries, multiple lacerations on his upper body & face, a suspected head trauma and a fracture thigh bone. As can be expected, the family was grateful for his life but beside ourselves with worry, we worried both for his immediate recovery and how this will affect his life in the long term - he just got admission to start undergraduate studies at the university. Coming into the trauma centre with my ‘just landed’ eye and a heavy dose of implicit bias, the first thing I noticed was what is missing. My subconscious did not immediately register the humanity, dedication and kindness of the trauma care staff. That is until Nurse Umar Mohammed and Dr Nafiu Sanusi took almost two hours of painstaking care to patch up our Abdul and stabilise him for what comes next - an X-ray for the fracture upper leg and a CT scan for the head trauma. This was all done in a milieu of wailing from other patients being cared for and the immense distress of the many families present. The centre was full with other victims of road accident, victims of bullet wounds from banditry attacks and survivors of occupational and domestic accidents. The staff were all Nigerians originally from various parts of the country taking care of patients also from various parts of the country. No one cared about wherever anyone’s is from when giving or receiving care. No ‘oga happy weekend’ or ‘wetin you bring for us’, no constant moaning about who is stealing more or what is not working in the country or the chaotic indiscipline of our daily lives. Whatever is the dysfunction of the Nigerian state was outside the borders of that hospital ward. Just dedicated professionals going about their jobs, from the stern security man at the door barring undue access to the cleaner going around the beds mopping up blood and bloodied used cotton and bandages and to the nurses, doctors and consultants. As it should be. As Abdul starts on his journey to recovery, our family thanks UDUTH - and in particular, Nurse Mohammed and Dr Sanusi. Some things in Nigeria still work. Our commentary should not be limited to our disappointments when we get it wrong, we should all shout when we get it right. ✌🏽

Dear Nigerians, I am truly honored and grateful for the opportunity to serve as your new Minister of Education, @NigEducation . I extend my sincere thanks to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for this remarkable opportunity, his trust and his unwavering support. I extend my profound appreciation to my dedicated team and the entire Federal Ministry of Health & Social Welfare @Fmohnigeria for their hard work and commitment to improving the health and well-being of our citizens. Together, in the past 18-months, we have made significant strides to enhance governance, strengthen the healthcare system, unlock the sector’s value chain, and improve our health security. I extend congratulations to my friend and colleague Dr @SalakoIziaq on his appointment as Minister of State for Health & Social Welfare, and assure you all that the health sector is in capable hands. As we embark on this new chapter, I am committed to fostering collaboration and innovation, ensuring that we continue to do what is right to rebuild our nation for ourselves and for our children. Together, we will create a brighter and more prosperous future. Thank you.

NMA MOURNS PAST PRESIDENT SIR DR LAWRENCE KAYODE OBEMBE The President of the Nigerian Medical Association, Dr Bala Audu, and indeed all Medical and Dental Practitioners in Nigeria are deeply saddened by the passing of Dr Lawrence Kayode Obembe. He served meritoriously as the President of our association between 2014 and 2016. Dr Obembe died on Tuesday 8th October 2024 in Atlanta USA, aged 75. Baba will be remembered as a selfless leader and a philanthropist who contributed immensely to the growth of medical profession. It is our prayer that God Almighty grant him eternal rest and give his family, loved ones and the entire medical community the courage to bear this irreparable loss.

Thank you, dear Vice President @officialSKSM for the warm reception and the pledge of support. We as a body of Nigerian doctors are committed to the continuous provision of quality health care to the Nigerian people. You can count on us as partners in progress!
Senator Kashim Shettima@officialSKSM

On his part, the NMA President, Prof Audu, said the executive members were at the Presidential Villa to show solidarity for the @officialABAT administration, particularly on account of its laudable policies for the health sector. He stated: “The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has come here today as a partner to your government and a patriotic group of Nigerians dedicated to the success of the Renewed Hope Agenda of this government and to ensure that this government delivers quality healthcare to all Nigerians.” The NMA President assured that the body “remains patriotic to this nation and will fully support the health policies of your government to drive improvement in quality healthcare delivery and universal access to services to all Nigerians." “This committee will work closely with this government, in delivering and implementing the policies of the administration in the healthcare sector. The NMA wants to assure and reassure you that it will play a key role in ensuring stability in the health sector and by extension, stability for this government to deliver on its promises to Nigerians as it has already started doing,” he added. Applauding the health policies of the @officialABAT administration, Prof. Audu noted that when fully implemented, the programmes and projects will “increase the training spaces for specialists in the country known as the residency training programme as well as quality of the postgraduate medical training. “We are sure that this government will address the infrastructural needs to be able to sustain the quality of this training as well as the remuneration that will improve the wellbeing of Nigerian doctors to remain and serve in this country,” he further noted. The NMA delegation included first Vice President, Dr. Benjamin Olowojebutu; second Vice President, Dr Ushakuma Anenga; Secretary General, Dr Ben Egbo; Deputy Secretary General, Dr Wale Lasisi; National Publicity Secretary, Dr Manir Bature, and Chairman of the FCT chapter, Dr Ugwuanyi Charles, among others.

@mumtazin @nmanigeria This is impressive. Keep it up as we look forward to the outcome of the intervention here, without punitive action on the HO. May it be a lesson to other centers with similar over use if there are!
