PLATEAU STATE GOVERNMENT JOINS FORCES WITH NIGERIAN POLICE TO CRUSH EMERGING THREATS OF URBAN TERRORISM Plateau State Governor, His Excellency, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has called for a decisive shift from routine peacekeeping to robust, intelligence-driven security operations following the deadly attack in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area, which claimed several lives, including women, and left many others injured. The Governor made this call on Monday, March 30, 2026, while receiving the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, Umar Shehu Nadada, who paid a courtesy visit to Government House on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Tilwan Disu. Expressing deep sorrow over the killings, Governor Mutfwang described the attack as “cowardly and utterly senseless,” lamenting that innocent citizens were targeted while going about their lawful activities. He disclosed that victims are currently receiving treatment at the Jos University Teaching Hospital, with many in stable condition. “It is deeply heartbreaking that a city we have long regarded as one of the most peaceful in the region has witnessed such horror,” the Governor stated. “We are now confronted with an emerging phase of urban terrorism, and this demands a fundamental rethink of our security architecture—shifting from reactive responses to proactive, intelligence-led operations.” Governor Mutfwang further revealed that security agencies had already recorded progress, including the arrest of a suspect allegedly involved in spreading inciting information capable of triggering unrest. He charged law enforcement agencies to intensify intelligence gathering and ensure that all those connected to the attack—both perpetrators and sponsors—are identified, apprehended, and prosecuted. While commending the youth and residents of the affected community for their restraint, the Governor emphasized the urgent need for strengthened collaboration between government, security agencies, and local communities. He stressed that criminal elements must be decisively confronted and treated as enemies of the state. “The time for hesitation is over. We must deploy every available resource to defend our people, protect lives and property, and safeguard the territorial integrity of our state,” he declared, assuring continued government support in terms of logistics, coordination, and operational backing for security agencies. Earlier, DIG Nadada stated that his visit was part of a fact-finding and operational assessment mission directed by the Inspector-General of Police. He disclosed that additional security personnel, including units of the Police Mobile Force and intelligence operatives, had already been deployed to the affected areas to restore order and track down those responsible. “We are here to assess the situation firsthand and implement effective strategies to neutralize these criminal elements,” Nadada said, adding that security agencies are working in close synergy to ensure the swift restoration of peace. The Deputy Inspector-General also revealed plans to visit the scene of the attack, engage community leaders, and consult key stakeholders as part of broader efforts to prevent any recurrence of such violence in Plateau State. He assured them that the perpetrators of the heinous act would be tracked down and brought to justice. “This is a painful moment for all of us. Angwan Rukuba is a community that accommodates people from diverse ethnic backgrounds across Plateau State. Therefore, this is not the pain of a few—it is the pain of all of us,” the Governor stated. Governor Mutfwang announced that the state government would ensure dignified burials for all victims, emphasizing that there would be no mass burial. "We will not allow mass burial. Government will work closely with the families to give each victim a befitting burial. They did not deserve to die in such a manner,” he assured. He further disclosed that the Plateau State Government would take full responsibility for the medical treatment of all injured victims until full recovery. “For those currently receiving treatment, government will bear the full cost of their medical care,” he added. The Governor appealed for calm, particularly among the youth, urging residents to resist any temptation to take the law into their own hands. He stressed that peace, restraint, and cooperation with security agencies are critical to restoring normalcy. "I urge you all to remain calm. The greatest honour we can give to the departed is to remain peaceful and allow due process to take its course,” he said. Providing updates on security efforts, Governor Mutfwang revealed that one suspect linked to prior threats had already been arrested, while efforts were ongoing to apprehend other perpetrators. He assured citizens that both the state and federal authorities, including the President, are fully engaged and committed to ensuring justice is served. APC FEMALE DEPUTY GOVERNORS MEET NATIONAL CHAIRMAN, PROF. NENTAWE YILWATDA, ADVOCATE GREATER GENDER INCLUSION IN POLITICS Ahead of the National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC), members of the APC Female Deputy Governors Forum have intensified advocacy for increased women’s participation in governance, calling for deliberate policies to advance gender inclusion and strengthen women’s roles in Nigerian politics. The call was made during a consultative meeting with the APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja on Friday. During the engagement, the Forum urged the party leadership to adopt a comprehensive affirmative action framework ahead of the 2027 general elections. Central to their proposal is the emergence of at least one female governor across each of Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, as part of broader efforts to deepen inclusivity and equitable political representation. The Forum emphasized that greater participation of women in leadership positions would not only strengthen democratic governance but also harness the vast contributions of women within the party and the nation at large. Responding, the APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, aligned with the Forum’s position, describing the current representation of women as currently below 5 percent in the National Assembly which he described as unacceptable. He stressed that the principle of federal character must extend beyond geographical considerations to include gender balance, noting that women constitute nearly 50 percent of both the party’s membership and Nigeria’s population. “If you talk about federal character, it is not just about the state where you come from; it also reflects gender, we will do anything that we can within the National Working Committee to ensure that we improve the representation of women,” je said. The Chairman further encouraged the Forum to formalize its proposals by submitting a memorandum to the party’s Constitution Amendment Committee to ensure that the recommended reforms are legally entrenched within the party’s framework. The meeting was attended by Her Excellency, Hon. Josephine Piyo, alongside other female deputy governors, including Sen. Akon Eyakenyi (Akwa Ibom), Lady Chinyere Ekomaru (Imo), and Prof. Ngozi Odu (Rivers). The engagement underscores the APC’s ongoing consultations aimed at strengthening internal democracy, promoting inclusivity, and positioning women for greater leadership responsibilities within Nigeria’s political landscape.
