@xiaochang @luke_stark @tamigraph Also agree that "algorithm" feels less prominent in ML than eg "model," although "model studies" is probably too overloaded. Kind of feel like "algorithm" is just the easiest shorthand for "computer" and we may be terminologically cursed as a result.

@xiaochang @luke_stark @tamigraph I feel like people who use "algorithm" usually want to write about socially significant computational systems, but I also get the sense that "algorithm" in CS often signals a move away from concrete systems towards mathematical abstractions.

Media/STS/Hist of tech folks: How do you see the relation btwn critical data v. critical algorithm studies? Interchangeable names for same area? Overlapping but distinct areas? One as earlier version of other? One as sub-area of other? Sign of "home" disciplines? Something else?

Filed a FOIA request with U.S. Strategic Command to see if I could learn anything about their gibberish tweet yesterday. Turns out their Twitter manager left his computer unattended, resulting in his "very young child" commandeering the keyboard.
