My new book is out: The Making of the Middle East: The Myth and Reality of Political Power. Growing out of my notes taken over roughly two decades of reading on the region it is a basic account of the making of the Middle East. Here is the link: amazon.com/dp/B0GP1DQ2JK

@BBaskanNotes Sure, agree. But what I mean - the book itself has a story now. A level of engagement and interest on a global level way beyond what academic books can hope for... Often from quite religious circles. Tracing that and it's reasons should be interesting

@JanVoemel I am not sure whether he state-ulema alliance explains every ill in the Muslim World. But, still, it is an important factor to be taken seriously.

President of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, just praised, -rightly I believe,- Erdogan on X and thanked the Turkish nation for its solidarity with the “Islamic ummah.” The timing is notable. The vocabulary is even more so. See my post: birolbaskan.substack.com/p/pezeshkians-…

Last night I was a guest on @hediyelevent 's YouTube channel to discuss the ongoing war, but ended up talking about how the region got to this point. It is in Turkish. But, there is automatic English translation option. youtube.com/live/GM635g6U-…

For years he appeared before the world composed, measured, firm, even smiling. These tears do not make him look weak. They show the burden he has long carried behind that calm face.

What moves me in this image is not only grief. It is history written on a face. Sheikh Tamim became emir on 25 June 2013, just as Qatar’s regional bet on the Arab uprisings was collapsing. Within a few years came isolation, blockade, and relentless pressure from its neighbors.

The relationship between Iran and the Arab monarchies of the Gulf has not always looked the way it does today. For long stretches of the modern period, Iran was not the central threat. Cont'd: birolbaskan.substack.com/p/iran-and-the…

The war now unfolding between the United States, Israel, and Iran has reached the Arab Gulf monarchies and shaken them deeply, as Iran has directed attacks and threats against their territory. This is a good moment to step back and take a longer view.

As the United States became an active participant in a war in the Gulf’s neighborhood, an old piece of advice began to circulate once again: do not rely only on Washington, diversify your security partners. cont'd: birolbaskan.substack.com/p/the-gulfs-on…

The latest war has exposed, once again, the central security problem of the Gulf monarchies. They have enormous wealth, expensive weapons systems, active diplomacy, and several foreign partners with a stake in their survival. Yet their security remains fragile.

My point is: the smaller Gulf monarchies are rich but too small to defend themselves alone in a much larger, poorer, and unstable region. And U.S. protection comes with a price: their neutrality fades and its wars can become theirs too. For English: birolbaskan.substack.com/p/small-rich-a…

A basic structural fact lies behind the security dilemma of smaller Gulf states: extraordinary wealth concentrated in very small states, exposed to a much larger, poorer, and often unstable regional environment. cont'd: birolbaskan.substack.com/p/small-rich-a…
