I wrote a jingle with this sentence that I sing for my children as I remind them why I refuse to get them those ebike things with electric motors. My son, you ARE the motor.

@Brian_Sauve @JoshDaws Tangential transition here: Taught a class at church awhile ago and a lady asked about AI (she was afraid it was solely of the devil) and I responded off the cuff "Even AI shall Him praise" and proceeded to explain postmill optimism. I feel like I owe you some money.

I knew you would interact with this post. Insulting AI is like a Josh Daws bat signal. 😂 Your response is not a strong analogy. AI-generated music isn't a video teaching you how to make music yourself; it's actually making the music for you. It's also not akin to MIDI, digital recording, software emulations of analog equipment, or other existing technologies—and only someone who doesn't have much experience with those technologies in the actual process of producing music would make that argument. The YouTube video teaching you how to fix a tool you use every day is actually making you a *better* human. Before the Industrial Revolution, most of us had a working knowledge of how to repair and maintain the tools we use every day. In this way, lots of modern technology can be a help to becoming a glory. I'm sure AI has lots of uses like this, probably even in the creative process of making music. I can even think of a few ways I could use it that would help me—but none of them would be things any of you would ever hear, because I still think actually making the music is more glorious than having it digitally imitated. I don't just make music to make a recorded file people can listen to. Other very important things are involved that AI-prompted music simply eliminates. It is a glory that your son can play an instrument, sing, and write a song, for example. So my argument isn't about who's going to get put out of work, but about allowing a technology to atrophy something we were made to do. I'm not primarily making an economic argument. Have you read Josef Pieper's "Leisure: The Basis of Culture"?

@ZacharyGarris This #sabbatical drama is interesting, I agree with many of the propositions on both sides. Not to Third-Way it too much, but I have a solution: The factory worker should get a sabbatical too. I think the #creation principle of #rest for ALL is an overlooked biblical theme.

Or hear me out—maybe pastors just need to toughen up. Yes ministry can be hard. But that’s just work, and most people don’t get sabbaticals. Practice the Sabbath, take a family day each week, and stop complaining.
Jason Kovacs@jasonkovacs

The average length of time a seminary trained pastor lasts in ministry is 5 years. The average length of time churches require you to work before taking a sabbatical is 7 years. On average, pastors burn out 2 years before they could qualify for well needed rest. @PeterPollock

@TheJollyBrawler Doesn’t seem appear you engaged the Lord’s Day distinction I was laying out. Could be my inability to elucidate it in 140 characters. Could be your heart is adamantly decided on this already. Either way, am going to wish a blessed evening and thanks for the interaction!

I disagree. -A good Pastor is required to take a day off. As is the factory worker. -He should be in fellowship with the Saints with no vocational responsibility regularly These are both signs of a Pastor who has not set boundaries to protect his longevity or family. It seems sacrificial, but it is foolish.

Is there a group, outside of -Clergy -Academicians -And Lefty Journalists who plan to write a book That considers extended “sabbaticals” to be a normal thing?

@TheJollyBrawler I get your principle. But pastoral ministry is a different animal than most vocations. The factory worker gets to rest on the Lord’s day, fed by (hopeful) a faithful shepherd, in fellowship w/the saints, w/no vocational responsibility. A good pastor seldom gets that refreshment.

If a Pastor needs scheduled Sabbaticals, I’m not convinced he is in the right line of work. Especially given that the men in his congregation likely work much more physically and often mentally demanding jobs than the Pastorate, and would be laughed out of the factory for asking about a Sabbatical. I also know that many Elder boards force Sabbaticals as a way to care for their Pastor. This practice should be stopped. Clergy can work like men. Or they can find a new job more fitted to their strength and energy levels.

@MikeCosper Says the man who took what had to be months or more to produce a podcast (an exceptionally well done one, I must say) as a referendum on a liberal city pastor’s failings?

I am no @TuckerCarlson lackey. But to claim his recounting of the movers behind Christ's crucifixion as a blood libel/dog whistle is either just the DUMBEST take or an intentional attempt to demonize the scriptures. Jesus was a Jew. The Jews petitioned Rome to crucify Him.

@StefanMolyneux The unrepentant in the midst of the fellowship of believers is a kind of cancer, as their sin will not remain isolated to them. Forgiveness, the prerogative of the aggrieved party, does not equate to reconciliation/restoration without repentance/restitution from the perpetrator.

@ZacharyGarris Agree on on 1-5, disagree on 6. Biblical preaching is absolutely an attempt to manipulate. In reformed circles we prefer phrases like binding the conscience, stirring the affections, etc. but its 100% intended to manipulate a heart level response.

Since we worship a holy God, public worship: (1) should consist of the elements that God has commanded (preaching, prayer, singing, etc.), (2) should only consist of the elements that God has commanded (e.g., no dancing), (3) should be done in a reverential manner, (4) should direct the congregation toward God and not toward those leading worship, (5) should not be performative, (6) should not be manipulative.
