Obviously, there's a LONG way to go until the Vols QB battle is decided, but right now it feels like Faizon Brandon and G-Mac are dead even. And if that’s truly the case, I’m rolling with Faizon. If he's this far along after being on campus for only 90 days, I've got a feeling he'll out-pace G-Mac in terms of development as the starter.

Nate Ament: "It's one of the reasons I chose Tennessee because of Coach Barnes and his faith. ... as a team, you're trying to glorify something bigger than yourself. And, ultimately, something that is Jesus Christ and is God can only lead to good things. When you're playing for something other than your own glory and the glory of others, the glory of your teammates, the glory of Christ, only good things can happen from there if you're being selfless and trying to take care of each other."

The first thing that comes to mind is Proverbs 13:24 - "Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him." But let's put more context into the conversation. Psalms 23 (another reference of "the rod"), speaks to how the Lord leads us through both a rod and staff. As shepherds tools, the rod was mainly used as firm correction. It's applicable to disciplinary tools parents may use such as spanking. But it is tied completely with the staff - a tool to draw the sheep near to the shepherd. Both are "a comfort" (which is an extremely important mention). Striking with a rod is NOT beating into submission. Proverbs 23:13-14 speaks to WHY we are commanded to use "the rod" - "Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you strike him with a rod, he will not die. If you strike him with the rod you will save his soul from Sheol." The goal of discipline is to "save his soul". Scripture makes it clear that we should discipline in loving guidance, correction, and teaching in order to learn to avoid sinful behavior (which is dangerous, and has natural consequences). If we are raised in loving, guiding discipline toward the goal of spiritual growth, we are drawn to pursue a fulfilling relationship with Christ.

Don't let Satan have your children. Don't let Satan have your marriage. Don't let Satan have your heart. No matter what barrier, no matter what hurt, no matter what situation - look beyond what is before you to God. "Lord, help me see things the way you do. Open my heart to be willing to face the difficulty, fortify my spirit with your peace. Protect my heart from the lies of the enemy, and protect my tongue from speaking lies to others. Do not let the enemy take any foothold in our home - reveal any small festering today, right now. Let us be a home rich in Your presence, Your peace, Your mercy, Your perfect love. In Your Holy Name, Amen.
