@wholemars @elonmusk I think it’s hilarious that we went from “we need to reduce, reuse, and recycle e-waste” to proposing a single-use non-repairable data center that we’re just going light on fire as we throw it into the ocean whenever we’re done with it

China lifted 800 million people out of poverty not through communism but by creating Special Economic Zones where capitalism was allowed to function. Shenzhen went from a fishing village to a megacity because the government said "in this specific area, you can build freely.” That should tell you something about what works and what doesn't. Even the world's largest communist country had to let capitalism in through the back door to feed its people.

If you want electricity prices to decrease over time, banning data centers is the last thing you should do. "Data centers are steady, long-term customers that give utilities the reliable income they need to invest in more power generation and grid upgrades, which benefits everyone," the @abundanceinst's @neil_chilson tells @reason

A Maine bill prohibiting data center development until the end of 2027 is proof that states are capable of adopting restrictive land use policies without federal intervention. reason.com/2026/04/03/mai…

Doing a search and rescue operations overnight using helicopters deep inside enemy territory in potentially contested airspace has got to be up there with the most dangerous things you could do on planet earth.

NEW: The Pentagon today invited more than 3,500 employees to attend a Good Friday service at its in-house chapel. Except it’s only for Protestants, not Catholics. huffpost.com/entry/news-liv…

@feelsdesperate The emulation of Civil Rights era tactics and politics has provided momentum for left wing/protest/activist politics since that time, and I feel like the woke era was the last bit of that momentum mixed with lockdown hysteria

A reasonable take I heard (from a millennial) is that wokeness happened because millennials looked around and saw that they had no transcendent belief system to guide them and give their lives meaning and so they just turned up the volume on Boomer anti racism because that was on hand. I think that’s right. It doesn’t explain everything but it’s definitely it’s definitely psychology true in an important way.

@NathanB60857242 @KelseyTuoc Native Americans ethnic background maybe correlated to test scores, since it’s not causation, their family’s income level is still a good factor if the school is trying to be more equitable. *Native Americans are very diverse & tribes all operate differently

@KelseyTuoc Interesting, I think it's clear that, for instance, native americans are likely to have worse test scores because of their ethnic background, given income level.

@NathanB60857242 It's obvious how being poor would mean a student's scores would be worse at the same ability level- they couldn't get a tutor, go to summer camp, etc. It's less obvious why skin color would mean a student's scores "should" be lower at the same ability level.

California's population grew 0.4% in the last decade. The number of state employees grew 24.5%. Total state spending grew 48%, inflation adjusted. You have to ask - where did all the money go?

Newsom has nearly doubled state spending, but where has the money gone? Our latest @CityJournal California report explains how $180B or more of taxpayer funds appears to have evaporated into the hands of fraudsters and criminals.

In the UK, pensions grow each year with wages, inflation, or 2.5%, whichever is highest. So every year, pensions either keep pace or get more expensive. Every other group is constantly falling behind the elderly. End this madness. richardhanania.com/p/start-demago…

Government pensions are a scam. Younger workers are paying more and more to fund a system that is mathematically impossible to sustain. Would you scrap the triple lock?
