We’ve started the youth basketball season where every team name ends in elite. Play a tournament where refs don’t call anything, zone is played more than not (even though highest levels rarely play it), and a successful weekend is getting a highlight to post on social media

@SteveFryer @latsondheimer I had a chance to watch them for the first time this season a couple times. Good players but the way they played together, understood their roles, & their team defense!!! I came away very impressed by the level of coaching.

A salute to basketball coach Richard Masson, who has coached for decades. He's retiring. Coached boys and girls teams in City Section and Southern Section.

@latsondheimer I only met him a couple times years ago when I was as an assistant at Santa Margarita under Jerry DeBusk. Very good coach! Great career Coach Masson!

@SteveFryer What is the point of the open division if we’re truly defining who the top teams are? Why isn’t D1 the top 32 teams based on what the computer comes up with? If league finish doesn’t matter, why do we have automatic qualifiers?

Having a 12-team Open Division has this drawback - Two of the teams won't qualify for the CIF State tournament. Only 10 CIF Southern Section Open Division teams can go to the state tournament. Two very good teams will be left out.

Seahawks QB Sam Darnold on his hoops background: "Playing multiple sports was huge for me growing up. I was always in the moment. Whenever I was playing football, football was my favorite sport ... and right when I transitioned into basketball, basketball was the main thing."

My son left for College yesterday. I’m on my way out there now. I am not ok. This is the hardest thing that I have ever done. There’s a million emotions running through my mind just hoping I did enough as a dad to prepare him. I think that’s just human. I already miss the daily stuff we take for granted , getting him up for school, hanging in our garage playing video games , making him breakfast, etc. Be there for your little ones, soak up every moment you have , never say no and enjoy because it goes way too fast!

Indiana HC Curt Cignetti - Standards "From the first play to the last play. Fast, physical, relentless. Smart, disciplined, poised. One play at a time, 6 seconds a play. Every play has a life and history of its own, like it's nothing, nothing. Not affected by success or failure. On to the next play, never satisfied. Playing to a standard, not the circumstances in the game." "You're up the in the 4th quarter 52-7, it's not okay to let up because of the circumstances of the game. Because you're playing to a standard. Habits, first you form your habits, then your habits form you."
