Q&A with new Gamecock RHP, Amp Phillips: DO-“What drew you to South Carolina and why did you ultimately end up choosing USC?” AP-“I’ve always wanted to play at South Carolina since I was a kid because I grew up a Carolina fan. When I came on my visit out of the portal and met Coach Mainieri and Coach Rooney I knew it was the going to be great fit. Usc is also a place for great opportunities to meet a lot of cool guys and compete on the biggest stage in the SEC.” DO-“You started at JUCO, how did that experience help you in the long run of your career that you wouldn’t have gotten at a D1 school?” AP-“Being able to come in as a freshman at SMC, get on the field and pitch a lot of meaningful innings was a great experience I had because although it may be Junior College the hitters are older more experienced, and much better than high school hitters; so it was great to be able to pitch a lot of innings early in my career and learn how to pitch to more competitive and productive hitters. Ultimately, it allowed me to learn how to pitch in games to hitters by actually doing it.” DO-“What is your mindset when you’re on the mound?” AP-“My mindset is focusing on one pitch at a time and making sure I put my all in to it, so if I get beat I get beat with my best stuff.” DO-“What would you say is your best pitch?” AP-“I’d say my slider because it plays well off of my fast ball that has some carry to it.” DO-“Would you say that you’re a pitcher that gets fired up or stays calm on the mound?” AP-“Little bit of both. I like to try to keep a calm demeanor on the mound, but there are some situations where I let my emotions out.” DO-“Do you have a favorite MLB team and who is your favorite player?” AP-“I don’t have a favorite team, but my favorite player is probably Walker Buehler.” DO-“Do you find yourself taking things he does and try to implement it into your game or do you try to just be yourself?” AP-“I really just try to be myself.” DO-“What role do you find yourself most comfortable in on the mound?” AP-“I enjoy starting the most. But I’m comfortable in any role. I just like pitching, it doesn’t matter what the role is. I just want the ball.” DO-“How do you handle failure and setbacks?” AP-“I like to learn from my failures, there is always something that can be improved and I like to learn from failures and setbacks to better myself for next time. Same with successes, there’s always something to learn and improve.” DO-“How do you work and communicate with your teammates?” AP-“I’m looking forward to meeting all my new teammates and getting to know them. I like to be a guy that everyone knows they can come talk to whenever, and I also like to learn from my teammates about different cues or anything they do while pitching that could help me.” DO-“What are you looking forward to the most about playing at Carolina?” AP-“I’m looking forward to making life long friendships with teammates and coaches. Also very excited about the opportunity to pitch in the SEC and compete at the highest level in college baseball.”

✅Landon Sexton has done nothing but win in the Northwoods League. With last night’s win over Kalamazoo, he’s now one of just four pitchers in the league with 5 victories in 2025. 21 strikeouts, just 3 walks in 19 IP. A no-brainer transfer portal pickup for any program.

Let’s hear it for @KadenSmith2021 👏 Kaden finishes the season as the nation’s leader in RBIs per game with 1.58 per contest. He tallied 79 on the year to break the school record, blowing past the previous record by 30. His RBI total also ranks as 8th most in league history.
