This is an important episode with the Bodo/Glimt academy director. It’s not so much about their current success but rather how their academy really exists to support the first team. The entire subtext of the discussion is how the culture, curriculum, strategy, technical focus is all in service to the first team. This is something that doesn’t exist here in the US. This is the real consequence of having a closed system. An open pyramid legitimizes all levels of competition and enables first teams all across the country to find their level. Here, youth clubs are typically quite aimless in their approach because their customer isn’t the first team—it’s the parents. So instead of developing kids to play on your first team, you develop them to be some sort of generalist that might get a look from a random college. It’s why the system is so haphazard.

@Itshenrymasters Tillman isn’t the problem and there aren’t enough midfielders on the bench. The reason you think it’s him is because he’s on the wing and you actually need Martinez there.

John Strong said that Marc Dos Santos has a plan to throw the kitchen sink at Alajuelense in the 60th minute if needed. Do not wait. Make the halftime subs. You got it wrong, Marc. Fix it.

The frustrating thing about what MDS put on the field is that it’s a repeat of the match against St Louis and that was a fluky win. You need goals in international play and he’s betting on Segura, Ordaz, Choiniere. Maybe it works out but…
