The downwelling Kelvin Wave over the Central Pacific is now slightly stronger than previous events (1997 and 2023) were at the same approximate longitude. There's also yet another downwelling wave yet to propagate east from the WPAC (driven by the last westerly wind burst). With weak trade winds forecast across the Pacific the next two weeks, there will be nothing to attenuate these Kelvin Waves, so they will continue to propagate east and lead to rapid warming of the Central and East Pacific as we progress into #ElNiño.

As AI potentially reduces the barrier to coding and plotting, part of me wonders if things will circle back to where knowing fundamentals and understanding processes is more important in fields like meteorology (and others). For example, today I was working with Claude on converting some NCL plotting code to Python (for our AOML model website) and also adding simulated IR maps. The initial output was "correct" in that it produced something that looked like a satellite image, but it was off in several key areas, and looked more like a microwave satellite channel. Turns out that's exactly what happened (see screenshot), and I was able to work with the AI to get the correct version. Obviously, you need to be able to know enough about code to do some things as well, but fundamentals may become critical again in this sort of environment, to know if what the AI is giving you makes any sense.

Today in 1981: the longest game in professional baseball took place. The Pawtucket Red Sox and Rochester Red Wings of the International League played to a 2-2 tie through 32 innings before play was suspended at 4:07 a.m. At that time, there were 19 fans remaining at the game. Pawtucket's owner game them lifetime passes to the team's games. The game featured former Hall of Famers Cal Ripken Jr. and Wade Boggs. 25 of the 41 players in the game went on to the major leagues. The game was completed on June 23rd with Pawtucket's Marty Barrett scoring the winning run in the 33rd inning. The two teams used 14 different pitchers who threw over 800 pitches and used 160 baseballs. #MLB #MiLB @PawSox @RocRedWings #longestgame

The magnitude of the Downwelling Kelvin Wave traversing the Central Pacific is comparable to 1997, and with another one forming over the far West Pacific in response to the massive WWB that spawned #Sinlaku, we could see some pretty ridiculous subsurface heat across the Pacific soon. I don't see any reason this event won't challenge for a Top-5 all time El Niño.

Oh no… that’s an absolutely monstrous Kelvin Wave in the Western Pacific 😳

.@POTUS: I recently directed @SecWar to begin releasing government files relating to UFOs and unexplained aerial phenomena. I am pleased to report this process is well underway. We've found many very interesting documents — and the first releases will begin very, very soon. 👽

JUST IN: The Solomon Sea Cyclone has officially been named MAILA by TCWC Port Moresby, marking the first time a storm has been named within Papua New Guinea’s area of responsibility in 19 YEARS. Exceptionally cold and moist updrafts are now erupting as Maila starts to organize.
