#DesignWorldStoriesOnPlastic 🔴 The problem is not plastics, but us On a trip to Cave Run, Mark Jones was stunned by the quantity of trash he found. It made him question the solutions being engineered to deal with environmental plastic. He questions whether technical solutions, things like design for recycling or the use of biodegradable polymers, could solve what he saw. His conclusion? The issue is not the polymers — it's us. 😳 Read the full story: designworldonline.com/technical-thin… #engineering #microplastics #plastics #pollution #materials #sustainability

#DesignWorldStoriesOnPlastic 🔴 Nanoparticles in water “Scientists find about a quarter million invisible nanoplastic particles in a liter of bottled water” was an AP headline in 2024, one of hundreds of stories prompted by a scientific publication. To help you reduce particle exposure, Mark Jones gives you some fun experiments you can do with the water to determine which choices have the fewest particles. #DesignWorldStoriesOnPlastic 🔴PVCs, IVs, and questioning risk Technical expert Mark Jones has a hypothesis: Elevated PVC in hospital patients comes from receiving IVs. Let's back up...Mark learned that a research team found microplastics in the heart plaques of cardiac patients, and 12.1% showed PVC particles. So, when he took his wife to get a colonoscopy, he grabbed a sample from her IV bag and tested it at home. Guess what he found? Yep, PVC microparticles. #DesignWorldStoriesOnPlastic 🔴 Don’t trash those plastic spatulas 2024 was the year of spatulageddon. Plastic spatulas were trashed due to reports of dangers lurking within. The journal article that raised concern contained an error, an obvious error. A correction was made, but there’s more to the story. #DesignWorldStoriesOnPlastic 🔴Thinking beyond the bill of materials Material selection is of utmost importance not only for product viability and performance, but also for long-term impacts that can create new problems later. In a recent study, scientists recorded and measured in real time how fast microplastics move through the gut passages of copepods (a zooplankton species) to estimate how fast they may transport plastics up and down the water column. This video clip from @PlymouthMarine shows real-time imaging of plastic gut passage in a copepod. These innocent copepods may be a major microplastic transport mechanism, embedding plastics into the seafloor and marine food web, expanding environmental concerns to potential global public health problems. What does this mean for design engineers? 🤔Considering the end-of-life of a product is critical. #DesignWorldStoriesOnPlastic This week, we're talking plastic — you either love it or think it's a bane of existence. 🫣 In the engineering world, it's a tough call. Plastics are cheap, durable, and reliably sourced for many industrial products. But they end up polluting the environment and causing new problems to solve. Stay tuned for these stories that will expand your thinking: 🔴 Thinking beyond the bill of materials 🔴 Don’t trash those plastic spatulas 🔴 PVCs, IVs, and questioning risk 🔴 Nanoparticles in water 🔴 The long road to Lego sustainability 🔴 The problem is not plastics, but us #engineering #microplastics #plastics #pollution #materials #sustainability
