During her tenure as first lady, Barbara Bush, a longtime needle-pointer, made the White House home to a colorful variety of needlepoint decorations. The 1991 White House holiday decorations featured 1,200 needlepoint ornaments and 82 needlepoint houses that formed a village. Needlepoint was also a signature decor for the Bush family both on public and private display. The first lady brought a large needlepoint rug to the White House Residence. This rug became a piece of family history, with memorable family dates and symbols embedded in it. Mrs. Bush needlepointed the family rug for nine years, having already taken the project with her to 17 countries and 36 states. She said about this heirloom, “I wanted something that I wouldn’t outgrow. Something I would have forever.” Images: George Bush Presidential Library and Museum/NARA
