'The Icknield Way.' (1911) The originality of this work represents Spencer Gore's response to European Post Impressionism in several shows staged in London, in particular Manet and the Post Impressionists and the Italian Futurist Painters in the same year this was made.

It strikes me this would suit Craw Crook very nicely. Craws - ✅ Crook - ✅ ....a bend in the Tyne for the initiated. Even the river is portrayed ! (Cromer means crow pond)

@CrowMonthly You may be aware of the flag of Cromer Town Council. (I live there, that's how I know about it!)

@JHCPAL I hear 'spelk' lots. I would always say 'spelk' instead of 'splinter'. Teenagers still say 'spelk' in the north-east. It hasn't died out.

Spelk. The word that started me off. A big language account said it was obsolete. No I thought & off I went. The word that always provokes a response. The one that, based on 2 years doing this, is THE word that identifies a region & the people from it - however far-flung. 🧵

@KenCunn55085606 I didn't notice that until we got home. It was the 'Geordie Tapas' that amused me .

James Amour, back shift Overman at New Hartley Colliery in January 1862. Trapped underground along with his 14 year old son & 197 others until they died from carbon monoxide poisoning. James held a prayer meeting underground whilst waiting to be rescued. We know this as he scratched details on a tin that was found with his body. This pre-1862 picture is one of the earliest if not the earliest photo known of a colliery official.
