An NIH-funded study from Northwestern Medicine, recently published in Gastroenterology, shows simulation based mastery learning (SMBL) improves colonoscopy and polypectomy skills for practicing GI physicians. Congratulations and many thanks to the leaders of this study, Sri Komanduri, MD, and Jeffrey Barsuk, MD. Find out more in this article from GI & Hepatology News: news.gastro.org/issues/2026/ma…

Today, I delivered the Mattox Lecture in the Michael E. DeBakey @BCM_Surgery named after a son of Lebanese immigrants who became the greatest ❤️ surgeon in the world. Today another Lebanese son stood at that podium. A pinnacle moment in any trauma surgeon's career and today it was mine🙏 @kmattox1 Thank you for making us all better.

Suicide is now the LEADING cause of death for US medical residents. We are losing 500 physicians a year. That is an entire med school class. Stop demanding "resilience" from doctors and start fixing the system. Tie executive bonuses to wellness, not just RVUs. Link to the recent episode is in the comments 👇

The gut-brain axis means gut signals reach the brain via the vagus nerve. Some of its 200,000 fibers sense nutrients, others monitor the immune system, pathogens, mechanical forces, hormones, and on and on. Specific vagus fibers project to specific brainstem neurons. The review proposes "interoceptomimetics," molecules designed to stimulate these body-to-brain signals when they fail. Salvador et al., "Intestinal interoception: A nexus of environment-body-brain interactions," Neuron, 2026.

Nothing like looking right into the gallbladder after EUS-guided gallbladder drainage in a nonsurgical candidate. This is about 1 week after placement. At time of placement pt was septic and, literally, dying. Now fine. #gitiwtter #surgery
