Almost as if the last 25 years didn’t happen (at best), or made things far worse (at worst). As someone who remembers 9/11 (I was in 8th grade), the sense of national unity, the war fever, and justifications for the invasion, the toppling of Saddam’s statue on April 9, 2003 (which I remember to this day), the slow then sudden decay into chaos and carnage, the “surge,” etc. this is simply surreal beyond words.
