On #Uttarakhand flood, large hydro, deforestation, rampant development in mountains will increase the risk of such events. Authorities need to wake up to the reality of #ClimateCrisis. Glacier calving/lake breaching events may be out of our control but adaptation+planning isn’t!

The unfolding disaster in #Uttarakhand is not a mere coincidence, it's a grim reminder of 2 things: 1) #ClimateCrisis that is ignored; 2) Haphazard development of roads, railways n power plants in ecologically sensitive area. We didn't learn a thing from 2013 Kedarnath disaster.

While we await official confirmation, what is known so far is that there has been a glaciel burst and then severe damage to a dam on the #Dhauliganga river in dist #Chamoli. Water levels have risen massively and alerts have been issued till #Haridwar
