@BackseatSakurai Exactly, they're all RPGs at the end of the day. I'm criticizing people who'll instantly turn down JRPGs because of their japanese identity (anime) but would jump for joy at the mention of a japanese game for children (mascot IP with minimal japanese identity)

@Fminus14 So what? JRPGs were directly inspired by western RPGs, and we can trace it back to D&D. the greater point is the cultures are in conversation in a way that the reductive framing deliberately obscures.

it's so funny how many Nintendo (japanese video game company) 'fans' hold an extreme resentment for them promoting JRPGs (popular japanese genre worldwide) I dont think half of them even know what they want from the company, would ANOTHER Mario game really bring their lives joy?

@Fminus14 I love JRPGs but Mario is just as japanese as any JRPG and this line of reasoning is really wrong and reductive. Japan has a massive mascot culture too btw, anime-styled things are not their only cultural export
