@JackMcPher95405 @nut_history That's a very significant offensive edge for Williams. Mays's defense and baserunnung may make up for it or slightly more, but it's not at all clear that it does.

@FunFunGamesFun @nut_history When you add defense and base running, I think it’s pretty clear. Williams was the better pilot though.

We often debate the best opening line in a book—Pride and Prejudice, Anna Karenina, 1984, etc—but what’s the best opening line in a song? I nominate Paul Simon: “A man walks down the street and says, ‘Why am I so soft in the middle now, when the rest of my life is so hard?’”

@JackMcPher95405 @nut_history Not clear that Mays was a better player. He was better at the other-than-hitting stuff, but .174 OPS is a lot to make up.

@nut_history Ted Williams was a better hitter. Mays was the better player. There is more to baseball than just hitting.

@Patton6606Chuck @JShalooby @nut_history It's not a matter of performance credit. Mays had the better career due to more playing time, but they're effectively equal on a rate basis. You're not getting a (much if at all) better player with Mays; you're getting one who was avoht as good and played more.

@JShalooby @nut_history Every military service member deserves recognition for their service. However, military personnel cannot receive performance credit in their previous or subsequent athletic endeavors. Allowing emotions to override factual participation is erroneous. It is merely your opinion.

@EricsElectrons I have, but I've also seen how defensive linemen try to get to the QB, and that ain't it.

"Reggie Jackson couldn't shine Willie Mays' shoes. He never hit .300, he's a butcher in the outfield and he's got a big mouth. What does he make, $8,000 week? I wouldn't pay him $8 a week. He's a bum." Mgr. Leo Durocher

@CV67Catapult @Jimfrombaseball Definitely not going to take the other side of "He was a jerk!" Lol I'm just saying that the man could play (unlike Durocher, who was also a jerk!) Not sure about the bad for baseball...he generated a lot of interest/excitement in the 70s.

@BJohnso96855199 @JohnnyWhales3 @Jimfrombaseball Or alternatively 14-time All-Star Reggie Jackson. You have to play pretty well to stay in the league long enough to strike out that many times. Kind of like all-time interception leader Brett Favre.

@JohnnyWhales3 @Jimfrombaseball And yet his teams won. As Durocher himself pointed out, being liked and being a good player are 2 different things ("Nice guys finish last.") The irony is, it was Durocher who was barely good enough to play in the majors, and who managed forever and won 1 ring.

@FunFunGamesFun @Jimfrombaseball Maybe “bum” is too strong. But Reggie rubbed people the wrong way all the way back to Oakland. Steinbrenner and Charlie Finley loved it. Leo Durocher, Billy Martin, Earl Weaver, and Dick Williams didn’t. It’s what it is.

@CV67Catapult @Jimfrombaseball Chambliss was a nice player, but he was no Reggie Jackson, and the only time he won rings was when Reggie was on his team.

@CV67Catapult @Jimfrombaseball He was also 36 when they traded him. And the year he left, the Angels won their division after finishing 5th the previous year; the Yankees went sub .500 after appearing in 3 World Series in 5 years while Reggie was there. They didn't make it back to the WS for 15 years
