It's always still 1984 in some small part of my heart. - You're THAT old? - Shuddup. - You have a heart?? - Shuddup.

@Vekica I wanted to name my first child that. Kevlar. It invoked happy memories.

@GarryPCox No wonder you look pained. Can't be easy to get a smooth rhythm going under all that kevlar.

@Vekica Indeed. As you can see, I've had to rub one out to get over the irritation.

@ThetaRider Good karma (or whatever name you want to give to it). All these things add up.

@GarryPCox Thank brother 👊 Was just a chance encounter. The guy has a close relative in government so I’m hoping some funding can help bootstrap it. But we can make a go of it either way. Nothing in it financially for me. I just want to make it happen.

I grew up poor as a typical GenX latchkey child. So I have a place in my heart for the people of the Virgin Islands who lack fair opportunity to actualize their full potential. I met someone who is going to help bring my engineering education program for kids to the islands. I guess there are a few more accomplishments worth achieving.

@magistrabeck While you're mulling, this might be the short book for you! Part of the Bloomsbury Object Lessons series. The Bookshelf one's on my list, but the handful I've read are good.

I wrote this a few years ago but organizing my books is still a conundrum. Just this week I couldn't find a book I know I bought! How do you organize your collection? wp.me/p4IB1p-13P

@magistrabeck Left hand side, 3 from the top beside the poetry (high enuf to be out of harm's way) is where I put the few signed editions, proof copies, hard-to-finds & a handful of very treasured gifts. If you were in the thieving business, that'd be the section to make a beeline for. 😂😂

@magistrabeck As for the library...pffffff, as someone else said: vibes. Some sections by publisher (NYRB, Charco, Fitzcarraldo, Harvill), a few by region (Irish, N. American, British etc), some sections new-unreads, some recently finished....melts my 29yo's head, but I can normally find shit.

@magistrabeck (If it does anything for you - we're all different, right? - & you're anyway curious about his novels, Coming Through Slaughter is always the one I recommend trying. x)

@TheEsteemedFox @jrostopovich A handful of years back she published a follow-up story to Secretary (not sure whether sequel is the right word) about the same girl 35yrs on. Maybe you'll like it, maybe not. Think I had mixed feelings about it.

@jrostopovich I haven't read this, but after I read what you wrote about "Secretary" I googled it to see if the film from 2002 was based on the story and it certainly was

Finally got this one posted (I’m so behind on all the reviews I want to do…) Check out my review of Mary Gaitskill’s seminal short story collection, “Bad Behavior.” Link in comments.

@TheEsteemedFox But it's his greatest by a mile (my opinion, anyhow). Think Borges meets Kafka meets mullings on eternity meets Monthy Pythonesque slapstick on bogland meets particle theory meets erotic love affairs between men & their bicycles.

@TheEsteemedFox It's the 1 that he claimed for years he'd lost the Ms of (presumably embarrassment at its rejection + self-doubt that he'd stretched too much; he went back to being a gag man after). In reality it sat on his sideboard looking at him for 24yrs before being published possthumously.

I think I missed the boat on Flann O'Brien, I should've read him when I was young and game for his kind of narrative tomfoolery. I've read too many books like these already, I'm far too bitchy and jaded now to enjoy something so relentlessly wacky and experimental!
