There is a reason we have a legal system that gives the state a monopoly on violence. The moment we cede this, or make exceptions for the most foul of crimes, we descend into anarchy, tribalism, and barbarism.

When you consider that the goal of the ruling class is not to govern but to stay in power it makes much more sense. The number of incredibly stupid or evil things they have *easily* got away with is staggering. “Reality” never asserted in this sense.

@BlambBritannica AA is correct when speaking about most of the world, but I suspect you're correct when speaking about the Anglosphere. You don't find things like the charter of the Forest or people like Wat Tyler in other cultures.
