@NomosEvents I'm honestly kind of surprised with the Americans. Normally 6 months before an election it's all they talk about. This year they let themselves get distracted by the world outside their borders for almost a whole month.

So when is the humiliating climb down coming? Or are they just going to do some more sporadic bombing & pretend Iran no longer exists via news narrative?

Humans are a species in which both sexes have their equivalents of the peacock's tail and the deer's antlers. Check out the latest excerpt of my forthcoming book, A Billion Years of Sex Differences, to find out why! [Link below.]

@peterboghossian Punishment must exceed the crime. You wouldn't ask someone convicted of fraud to pay *less* than they made from the fraud. If the state isn't willing or able to punish appropriately you get Somalia either way.

There is a reason we have a legal system that gives the state a monopoly on violence. The moment we cede this, or make exceptions for the most foul of crimes, we descend into anarchy, tribalism, and barbarism. What might could convince right leaning accounts of this? Somalia.

"reality asserting itself" typically means someone else comes and conquers you. The rules-based international order paved the way for limitless tyranny by banishing competition between states.
Academic Agent@AcademicAgent_X

When you consider that the goal of the ruling class is not to govern but to stay in power it makes much more sense. The number of incredibly stupid or evil things they have *easily* got away with is staggering. “Reality” never asserted in this sense.

@BlambBritannica AA is correct when speaking about most of the world, but I suspect you're correct when speaking about the Anglosphere. You don't find things like the charter of the Forest or people like Wat Tyler in other cultures. (Some might say *this* is why the English must be replaced)

@DCardassia @AcademicAgent_X You will notice that the daily load shedding in South Africa has *not* managed to displace the AMC despite 30 years of decline.

@AcademicAgent_X She got away with it in large part because her government was able to keep the lights on. When we have daily "load shedding" like South Africa does will it be sustainable for "red-Ed"?

@Anglo_Ouroboros @AcademicAgent_X While I tend towards the Engineers understanding on this matter, most of the "auxiliary systems that made a three day week liveable" aren't relevant: everything is imported anyway. "Your cellphone & heat won't work" is the extent of the threat.

@AcademicAgent_X Agreed, but the world has moved on since then and we’re far more reliant on electricity now than we were in the 70s. All of the auxiliary system that made a three day week liveable have been dismantled and replaced with systems reliant on electricity.

The CBA is scolding an unnamed journalist for criticizing a judge, calling it a "crude effort at undermining public confidence in the judiciary." Since this is clearly about me: I will not apologize for my column about Justice Faisal Mirza two weeks ago.

The belief that “reality will reassert” is completely unfounded as the past 300 years of western history prove.

@simon__roberts Modern politics is little beyond a cargo cult. Politicians read the books, and saw the buildings and pageantry, but never understood the "how" of government. All they understand is the why: they want free stuff delivered.

It's not just Trump but all politicians in the west. It's always a Future that never arrives. Meanwhile, dealing with the Past is a 'waste of space'. Selectively, of course.
