In February 1974, Patty Hearst, the granddaughter and heiress of American millionaire media tycoon William Randolph Hearst, was kidnapped by the radical left-wing group the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA). The group demanded that the Hearst family provide millions of dollars' worth of food aid to the poor.
Months later, the public was left in shock. Hearst reappeared under the codename "Tania", captured by security cameras carrying a gun during a bank robbery in San Francisco. Her transformation from hostage to armed militant became the subject of debate for years. Two months after her abduction, Patty released an audio recording announcing that she had joined the SLA of her own free will and had changed her name to "Tania."
She was captured by the FBI after a 19-month manhunt. When she was imprisoned, she still described herself as a revolutionary. In 1976, she was convicted of bank robbery and sentenced to seven years in prison. Her sentence was commuted by President Jimmy Carter in 1979, and she was released.
