The first chapel service of the school year, AKA “Happy Potter Day.”

In the first chapter of John’s gospel we meet the Baptist, who is strong and harsh; he can correctly diagnose the human condition, but cannot save. John thunders; Jesus passes by. John commands; Jesus invites.

Today is so hot and so humid it makes me wish my neighbors had a pool.

In the beginning was the Word. And the Word became flesh. And then It became community. And then It became ritualized. And then It became institutionalized. And then it became rationalized. And then it became argued. And then it became irrelevant.

So when Jesus bids us, "take up your cross and follow me" he may be telling us how to pack for the trip! :-)

"Crucified with Christ" certainly points to the actual crucifixion of our Lord, but it may also indicate that we, too, experience what the Lord experienced. To be in union with Him is to share his experiences--but in our setting and life.

Some Christians are fond of the phrase "dying to self" as a kind of noble action in which we engage., as if the onus is upon us to kill ourselves . . .

"To each one is given grace as Christ proportions." What size portions do you think Jesus gives?

God is present in his word. God is present in his people. God is present in his creation. God is present.

I wonder if 1Peter 5:6-7 implies that worry is a kind of pride. What do you think? "Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you."
